How this score was computed
The VGC Score is a weighted blend on a press-comparable 0-100 quality scale. Steam approval rates are first calibrated (95% positive on Steam ≈ 89.5 quality, since Steam approval skews high). Press and tracked creator reviews each count ~2x a player review and share one cap against player evidence (creator buy/skip calls pool into an approval rate, calibrated like Steam approval); all-time sentiment is capped and halved (it's context, not verdict); reviews of the current build carry the most weight when a fresh patch anchors the window; and a 'typical game' prior keeps small samples from pegging the scale. Because press reviews and Metacritic user aggregates describe the launch build, their weight decays as the game ages (3-year half-life after a 1-year grace). That's how a game that launched rough can outgrow its old reception once updates win players over. Reviews under 2h playtime (the refund window), non-Steam activations, and free copies are downweighted.

“Replaced is one of the most visually striking games in recent memory, but its obsession with providing a cinematic experience makes for a tedious, monotone, and frustrating cyberpunk thriller.”

“REPLACED is a remarkable achievement that demonstrates how indie developers can create experiences that rival big-budget productions through focused vision and exceptional artistry. While it has flaws that prevent it from reaching perfection, the core experience is so compelling that these issues fade into the background. This is exactly the kind of ambitious, thoughtful game that deserves support. Sad Cat Studios has created something genuinely special, a cyberpunk tale that asks important questions while delivering stunning visuals and solid gameplay. For anyone interested in narrative-driven gaming or exceptional pixel art, REPLACED is an essential experience. In a year full of impressive indie releases, REPLACED stands out as a genuine masterpiece that will likely become a cult classic. Don't let this digital soul's journey pass you by., ColdMoon”

“REPLACED is an unforgettable adventure that was well worth the wait all these years. It’s the perfect blend of a cinematic action-adventure set in a pixel-art world with a profound story about the division of society and the journey of self-discovery. Beautiful art style, a very good combat system, platforming elements, puzzles, and phenomenal music and cinematography come together to create a unique combination that makes this one of the best indie games of the year.”

“Replaced fits its narrative in many ways. The story and visuals are incredible, among some of the best I have seen. The combat tries too many things, but does get credit for trying. The characters feel alive, with history baked into their every interaction. And Reach is a superb main character, a childlike AI forced to be a different type of tool in search of what their purpose is. Replaced has its flaws, especially during combat. But I don’t think those flaws stack up enough to detract from the things it does with a master’s touch. Replaced reaches for the stars, but only ends up hitting the moon. And that’s still pretty good.”

“Replaced is a stylish but flawed cyberpunk indie. There’s a compelling idea at its core, but uneven execution holds it back at almost every turn. If you can push through the dull combat, mindless side quests and inconsistent platforming, the story and striking aesthetic are just about strong enough to carry you to the end.”

“Rather than a spectacular journey across a ruined America, Replaced delivers an incredibly beautiful yet overly stretched story saddled with several poorly implemented gameplay mechanics.”

“After years of uncertainty and delays, Sad Cat Studios’ cinematic thriller finally comes into its own, delivering an experience that made every second of the wait worthwhile. At the end of the day, I can’t help but feel that Sad Cat Studios’ work and the story of R.E.A.C.H. are nothing more than a reflection of our own internal struggles to find our place in the world. The wait was definitely worth it.”

“REPLACED stands out for its visual identity and the strength of its atmosphere, delivering a dense, stylish world loaded with meaning. Its narrative, supported by themes such as identity and inequality, remains engaging throughout, while exploration deepens that immersion with compelling lore elements and meaningful interaction. In terms of gameplay, there is a solid and creative foundation, especially in combat, which offers an interesting and rewarding pace when everything works as intended. However, inconsistencies in command responsiveness and some readability issues during more chaotic moments end up compromising the experience, creating frustrations that could have been easily avoided. Even so, REPLACED gets more right than wrong. It is a game built on very well-conceived ideas, and while its execution is not flawless, it still delivers memorable moments.”

“REPLACED is a triumph of audiovisual design and powerful storytelling that will make you reflect on what constitutes human identity. The experience is slightly marred by an uneven pace caused by tedious side quests, an overcomplicated combat system in the later stages of the game, and a harsh save system. But if you can overlook these design flaws and occasional technical glitches, you’re in for one of the most beautiful indie games of recent years.”

“Replaced is a reminder of why the indie scene matters. Sad Cat Studios spent five years, through delays, a war, and a studio relocation, delivering a debut that wants to say something, and mostly succeeds. For fans of cinematic action platformers from Another World to Prince of Persia, this is a worthy heir.”

“A masterclass in cinematic world-building, REPLACED blends breathtaking pixel art with a profound existential narrative. By trapping an AI within a human body, it delivers a gripping commentary on identity and social decay. With its fluid combat and neon-drenched melancholy, it is a landmark achievement in indie storytelling.”

“The key factor in Replaced is whether you’ll be captivated by the visuals and immersed in the cyberpunk universe enough for them to push you forward despite the setbacks, and there are plenty of those, as the repetitive combat and unresponsive controls in the platforming sections can really try your patience. Ultimately, this is a game that’s better to look at than to play.”
