How this score was computed

The VGC Score is a weighted blend on a press-comparable 0-100 quality scale. Steam approval rates are first calibrated (95% positive on Steam ≈ 89.5 quality, since Steam approval skews high). Press and tracked creator reviews each count ~2x a player review and share one cap against player evidence (creator buy/skip calls pool into an approval rate, calibrated like Steam approval); all-time sentiment is capped and halved (it's context, not verdict); reviews of the current build carry the most weight when a fresh patch anchors the window; and a 'typical game' prior keeps small samples from pegging the scale. Because press reviews and Metacritic user aggregates describe the launch build, their weight decays as the game ages (3-year half-life after a 1-year grace). That's how a game that launched rough can outgrow its old reception once updates win players over. Reviews under 2h playtime (the refund window), non-Steam activations, and free copies are downweighted.

Acclaim gate: the raw blend lands at 89.4, but scores above 88 must be earned in front of a mass audience; this verdict rests on 540 player reviews, a largely self-selected fanbase. As more players weigh in, the ceiling rises (full scale unlocks at 100,000 reviews).

Gaucho and the Grassland is an adventure with hints of a farm simulator steeped in Brazilian folklore, but reflecting the culture of all of Latin America. It stands out not only for its open gameplay, but also for offering a heartfelt tribute to Latin American culture and folklore, a theme rarely explored in video games. It's true that Epopeia Games' title isn't going to redefine the genre, but it offers a different approach to farm simulators, placing narrative and exploration above the typical goal of making money.

Gaucho and the Grassland is a game that has some good ideas, but fails to execute them convincingly.

Gaucho and the Grassland is not your typical farming simulator. It has a strong cultural identity, a respect for folklore, and a gentle atmosphere that make it unique in its genre. It's rare to have the opportunity to immerse yourself in a world so steeped in Latin American traditions, and in this respect, it's a great success. However, its limitations are clear. The repetitiveness of the quests, the lack of clarity of certain objectives, and the numerous technical bugs prevent the game from shining in all its glory. Its charm, sincerity, and cultural richness are more than enough to justify diving into it, especially if you like this kind of game. You just have to accept the limitations of the experience.

Gaucho and the Grassland presents good ideas and a distinctive atmosphere that reflects the spirit of life in the grasslands, but it suffers from an identity shift between adventure and cozy games, which prevents it from delivering a cohesive experience and causes it to lose part of its charm.

Gaucho and the Grassland is a refreshing idea, adding adventure and cultural history to a game genre that can always use more diversity. But as it pulls up towards release, it’s still in a bit of a rough state, with game-locking bugs and some confusion left as to how to accomplish some of your many goals. The developers appear consistently active at working on the game, posting fairly frequent updates about what they’re working on. They’re not very responsive to Steam users, preferring Discord, so bear that in mind. Overall, I desperately want to like this game, but with its current issues, and my inability to double-check several of them before writing this review, I have to stick to the lower end of our review scale. But do please keep an eye on this game and listen to fans as the weeks go on. I have hope that this game will grow into something special, but even as it meets its release date, I feel it still needs some time to get there.

A refreshing, culturally rich twist on the life sim adventure, marred only by some technical roughness, Gaucho and the Grassland is a game that grows into itself over time and rewards those willing to overlook its clumsy start.

In Gaucho and the Grassland, you don’t grind for coins or sell crops for cash. There is no economy in the traditional sense. Instead, the world runs on gathering, trading, helping, and earning goodwill. You raise animals, collect resources with your faithful dog and horse, and complete quests to unlock more of the land. It’s refreshing to play a farming game that doesn’t shove numbers and gold at you. This is about harmony and connection, not profit.

Gaucho and the Grassland is a charming and relaxed life sim, built around construction, livestock and Latin American mythology. Its world conveys calm, humour and respect for tradition, although the endgame becomes repetitive and somewhat confusing.

Combining two different themes that complement each other well, Gaucho and the Grassland is a Brazilian game worthy of praise. While on the one hand we need to take care of crops, animals, and farms, on the other we have to help friends and take care of a mystical world. The gameplay is simple and fun, with a production full of charisma, filled with references to Brazilian culture, particularly to the gaucha one. In short, a great and neighborly game that's a must-have for your library.

Despite its familiarity to your average farming sim, this is more of an adventure game at its core.
