How this score was computed
The VGC Score is a weighted blend on a press-comparable 0-100 quality scale. Steam approval rates are first calibrated (95% positive on Steam ≈ 89.5 quality, since Steam approval skews high). Press and tracked creator reviews each count ~2x a player review and share one cap against player evidence (creator buy/skip calls pool into an approval rate, calibrated like Steam approval); all-time sentiment is capped and halved (it's context, not verdict); reviews of the current build carry the most weight when a fresh patch anchors the window; and a 'typical game' prior keeps small samples from pegging the scale. Because press reviews and Metacritic user aggregates describe the launch build, their weight decays as the game ages (3-year half-life after a 1-year grace). That's how a game that launched rough can outgrow its old reception once updates win players over. Reviews under 2h playtime (the refund window), non-Steam activations, and free copies are downweighted.
| Component | Positive | Quality (0-100) | Weight (pseudo-reviews) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Press reviews (OpenCritic) | – | 89 | 110 |
| Creator reviews (1 tracked) | – | 95 | 1 |
| All-time Steam reviews | 97% | 92 | 1000 |
| Metacritic user ratings | – | 92 | 411 |
| Post-patch Steam reviews (trust-weighted) | 96% | 91 | 3000 |
| Calibration prior (typical game) | – | 72 | 50 |
Acclaim gate: the raw blend lands at 91.4, but scores above 88 must be earned in front of a mass audience; this verdict rests on 39,486 player reviews, a largely self-selected fanbase. As more players weigh in, the ceiling rises (full scale unlocks at 100,000 reviews).

“Hi-Fi Rush is not only a great surprise for the whole Xbox audience, but also a strong contender for the Game of the Year. Tango Gameworks should definitely experiment more often.”

“A wonderful action platformer which appeared out of nowhere and masterfully blended all the good things about this genre. It would be great if our industry surprised us like it happened with Hi-Fi RUSH more often.”

“Hi-Fi RUSH burst onto the scene and instantly captured massive attention thanks to its star-studded soundtrack, rhythmic gameplay, action-packed combat system, and the main character’s slightly clownish nature. The game will get you in the mood with its rock tracks, set off a wild ride, and you definitely won’t want to get off. A game this well-made certainly deserves better pricing, because for very little money, you get way too much, and way too good, music.”

“For whatever faults it may have, Hi-Fi RUSH is an outstanding game. Not only is it fun to play, it’s a reminder that not every game needs to be something more than it actually is.”

“Level after level, Hi-Fi Rush introduces something new, whether it be a mechanic, scenario, character, or implementation of a song, that deepens my appreciation for it. It's relentless in its pursuit of being a phenomenal game and unendingly proves itself time and time again. At the end of every mission, I couldn't help but think of how games this expressive and big and bright seem a growing rarity, but if Hi-Fi Rush is any indication, they've got a bright and bold future ahead.”

“Hi-Fi Rush is a beautiful cel shaded game that mixes the hack and slash genre with music and rhythmic actions, and while it falters a bit with the pacing and has some frustrating sequences, it's a delight from start to finish, one I just couldn't put down.”

“Hi-Fi Rush arrives on PlayStation 5 in its best form, offering its wonderful mix of action and rythym gameplay. Fun to play, wonderful to look at and satisfying to listen to, Tango Gameworks' title could only do better in the implementation of DualSense, because otherwise I wouldn't change a thing.”

“Hi-Fi Rush is clearly one of 2023's most pleasant gaming surprises, as well as a respectful nod to the glorious 2000-era of action titles where you just want to have pure unadulterated fun with simple mechanics to comprehend.”

“It’s pretty evident this is the team’s first action title in a while - there are more than a few mistakes on display - but it’s hard not to applaud the ingenuity and sheer fun-factor.”

“Hi-Fi Rush isn't only one of the pleasant surprises of 2023, it's one of the best games that Xbox has offered in a long time. This could mark the start of a new big series!”

“There's an infectious, easy-going joy to this whole adventure and it's backed up by addictive melee gameplay that strikes a masterful balance between having enough depth to challenge rhythm game aficionados whilst also making sure there's enough flexibility that, even if you're not particularly great at sticking to the beat, you'll still have a great time. It doesn't take itself too seriously, in short, and it's all the better for it.”
