Review sentiment over time

Weekly positive-review rate (green) and review volume (bars). Dashed lines mark significant patches; the amber line is the start of the current scoring window. Hover the dots to see what drove a dip or a jump.

How this score was computed

The VGC Score is a weighted blend on a press-comparable 0-100 quality scale. Steam approval rates are first calibrated (95% positive on Steam ≈ 89.5 quality, since Steam approval skews high). Press and tracked creator reviews each count ~2x a player review and share one cap against player evidence (creator buy/skip calls pool into an approval rate, calibrated like Steam approval); all-time sentiment is capped and halved (it's context, not verdict); reviews of the current build carry the most weight when a fresh patch anchors the window; and a 'typical game' prior keeps small samples from pegging the scale. Because press reviews and Metacritic user aggregates describe the launch build, their weight decays as the game ages (3-year half-life after a 1-year grace). That's how a game that launched rough can outgrow its old reception once updates win players over. Reviews under 2h playtime (the refund window), non-Steam activations, and free copies are downweighted.

Although far from the highest quality Soulslike, Another Crab’s Treasure is an original, intensely likable one. Its sharp script is backed up with a fun gameplay conceit, wrapped up in a package with a whole lot of character. We did the whole review without a shell pun either, so that's also a positive point!

The game’s quirky sensibility lends amusing irony to its critique of modern industry’s environmental destruction. Where item descriptions in the Dark Souls series and its ilk flesh out the esoteric lore of their settings, here they offer a crab’s-eye view of life on the surface. “Residue of a painful venom lines the outside of this armor,” reads the blurb about the nozzle of a hot sauce bottle that Kril can equip as a shell. As Another Crab’s Treasure conjures a universe in which the vast horde of trash sunk carelessly into the sea might have its benefits, the game pokes countless holes in its fantasy, letting reality flood in: No amount of make-believe can render humankind’s impact on the Earth anything but poisonous.

Another Crab's Treasure boasts the usual facets of a Soulslike whilst also implementing its own take on well-known mechanics. Nevertheless, significant drops in frame rate, numerous glitches, and occasionally awkward controls do hinder the experience, at least on Nintendo Switch. If you can look past these problems, or if updates arrive to patch them up, Another Crab's Treasure may scratch your Soulslike itch.

Although its combat leaves a bit to be desired, “Another Crab’s Treasure” world, characters and very funny storytelling and puns more than make up for it. It’s absolutely time for crab and you’re going to have a great time with it.

Another Crab’s Treasure doesn’t reinvent the Soulslike wheel by any means. It does, however, establish some unique ideas. Not only does the shell system tie in well with the game’s unique aquatic setting, but it also adds a good amount of flexibility for players to overcome obstacles.

For just under $30, Another Crab's Treasure is an excellent, if a bit basic, soulslike for anyone looking to get into the genre. From its beautiful environments to its cast of charming, cute characters, the game's story is clever, witty, and a biting reminder that we live in community with each other and not for ourselves.

By the end of the journey offered by Another Crab’s Treasure, what remains is not just the memory of a well-crafted adventure, but the awareness of having experienced something that naturally stands out within an increasingly crowded genre. The game achieves something far from obvious: it feels recognizable from the very beginning without ever becoming derivative or lacking identity. This strength comes from a clear vision, carried forward consistently throughout the entire experience, without noticeable compromises that would undermine its foundation. One of its most notable achievements lies in its ability to maintain a steady balance between lightness and depth. The colorful aesthetic, the often ironic characters, and the seemingly simple situations may suggest a more casual experience, yet over time a more structured layer emerges, built on solid mechanics and themes that quietly accompany the player. This balance stands as one of the project’s most successful outcomes. On a personal level, the experience delivers a strong sense of progression that never feels forced. The game does not rely on rigid pacing or excessively punishing difficulty spikes, but instead builds a path that encourages learning and experimentation. Every mistake becomes an opportunity for understanding, every discovery a step toward greater mastery. This approach keeps the experience accessible without trivializing it, allowing even less experienced players to find satisfaction. The shell system, a central gameplay element, plays a decisive role in this. The constant need to adapt to available objects turns each situation into a small strategic challenge, keeping player engagement consistently high. This is not complexity for its own sake, but a mechanic that enriches the experience without weighing it down, integrating seamlessly with both narrative and environmental context. On an emotional level, the game leaves a more subtle yet lasting impression. It does not rely on dramatic peaks or striking twists, but instead builds a gradual connection with both the world and its protagonist. The environmental dimension, with its implicit critique and depiction of a disrupted ecosystem, adds depth without ever becoming didactic. It is a form of engagement that grows over time, more reflective than immediate. That said, the game is not without flaws. Certain gameplay patterns tend to repeat, and the depth of the combat system may not satisfy players seeking a more technical and layered challenge. However, these aspects do not compromise the overall experience, as they align with a design philosophy that prioritizes coherence and accessibility. Another Crab’s Treasure stands as a strong example of how a well-established genre can be reinterpreted through simple yet effective ideas. It does not aim to be the biggest or the most complex, but it succeeds in being one of the most authentic. It is a game that surprises without forcing it, that entertains while leaving something behind even after the journey ends. It is easy to recommend to those willing to look beyond appearances and discover how much depth can lie beneath a seemingly light world.

Judged only on the hybrid version, Aggro Crab's underwater adventure is a choppy, unsightly mess that veers briefly into unplayable territory in the Unfathom, potentially due to memory leaks. If you're a Souls-like addict, Another Crab's Treasure is worth checking out, as long as it's on a platform other than Switch.

With more polish, Another Crab’s Treasure might have been an all-time indie gem. Its sometimes tedious physics and less-balanced early bosses don’t overshadow the game’s beautiful world, creative levels, sincere cast, and thoughtful themes, but do pollute the otherwise sparkling water.

Another Crab's Treasure is a delightful mixture of all the right things; the precise tug-of-war combat you'd find in a game like Sekiro, the verticality and exploration of old-school 3D platformers, and the light-hearted goofiness of classics like Banjo-Kazooie.

Another Crab's Treasure is a colorful and lively platformer that's also a tough action RPG with Soulslike combat. They juxtapose each other perfectly, and I had a fun time discovering shells, collecting microplastics, and defeating grueling bosses.
