How this score was computed
The VGC Score is a weighted blend on a press-comparable 0-100 quality scale. Steam approval rates are first calibrated (95% positive on Steam ≈ 89.5 quality, since Steam approval skews high). Press and tracked creator reviews each count ~2x a player review and share one cap against player evidence (creator buy/skip calls pool into an approval rate, calibrated like Steam approval); all-time sentiment is capped and halved (it's context, not verdict); reviews of the current build carry the most weight when a fresh patch anchors the window; and a 'typical game' prior keeps small samples from pegging the scale. Because press reviews and Metacritic user aggregates describe the launch build, their weight decays as the game ages (3-year half-life after a 1-year grace). That's how a game that launched rough can outgrow its old reception once updates win players over. Reviews under 2h playtime (the refund window), non-Steam activations, and free copies are downweighted.

“Minecraft Legends presented itself as a giant world offering much space to explore its surroundings. We had various environments full of wildlife to look forward to. It was a great adventure that was supposed to leave us in awe and an excellent system for devising new strategies. But everything the game offers in its current state is more of a taste of what it could evolve into. The combat will provide fun for a while, but once you find one strategy that works, you don't need to invent anything else. That's not true of the PvP mode, which will offer some exciting battles thanks to the different players.”

“A disappointing strategy game based on Minecraft IP with tiring gameplay and a myriad of awkward design decisions.”

“Minecraft Legends is a decent game overall, and despite some shortcomings, it can keep you entertained for a few hours. The game relies primarily on its charm and colorful visuals. Given its simplicity, I would recommend it to a younger audience, who can really enjoy it together with their families.”

“Even though Minecraft Legends isn't a bad game, the fact that it's in direct competition with its much better predecessor makes the title hard to recommend. ”

“Minecraft Legends, at least on Switch, is an average game at very best, but frustrating controls, terrible AI, and repetitive gameplay all come together to make for something that feels substantially beneath the quality of the Minecraft brand. Though we commend the developers for trying something new here, this is easily the worst Minecraft spinoff Mojang has produced. We'd recommend this one to only the most enthusiastic of Minecraft fans, and even then, only if you opt for the PC version. If you don't have a PC or don't want it there, then we'd suggest you pass; Minecraft Legends on the Switch simply isn't worth your time or money.”

“Minecraft Legends showcases a novel approach to the beloved universe by fusing it with the gameplay mechanics of the RTS genre, but the lack of tactical options makes it a bit too safe of a spinoff.”

“Minecraft Legends should provide a lot of fun in small doses because most of the gameplay mechanics are superb. What’s more, the game will receive a multiplayer mode in the future, which should offer a completely different experience.”

“Minecraft Legends stays true to Minecraft's core principals while offering a truly unique PvP experience.”

“You will not notice the negative parts of Minecraft Legends when you first start playing it. As you keep at it after an hour or two, you will soon realize that the world is just a hollow mimic of the original. I was told the game was made to be catered to kids, but the gameplay feels too overwhelming.”

“The building blocks of Legends' personality and hybrid design are there, but Mojang & Blackbird fumbled with this blueprint.”

“If you can get over the often daft AI, mild learning curve with systems that might be pretty complex for younger players, and few performance issues, then you might be swayed by its charm. It has a lot of heart and that's where it shines the brightest.”

“Minecraft Legends looks like Minecraft and somewhat feels like it, as you would probably expect, but it really does play like its own proper game with the action strategy elements - even if it doesn't quite match the depth of certain other titles within the strategy genre. Overall, Mojang and Blackbird Interactive have done a good job adapting this mega video game IP to yet another category, and have definitely provided a fun multiplayer experience, despite some learning curves which might be a challenge for younger Minecraft fans and newcomers. This is a welcome introduction to the strategy genre and is worth a look if you're seeking more adventures in the Minecraft universe.”
