How this score was computed

The VGC Score is a weighted blend on a press-comparable 0-100 quality scale. Steam approval rates are first calibrated (95% positive on Steam ≈ 89.5 quality, since Steam approval skews high). Press and tracked creator reviews each count ~2x a player review and share one cap against player evidence (creator buy/skip calls pool into an approval rate, calibrated like Steam approval); all-time sentiment is capped and halved (it's context, not verdict); reviews of the current build carry the most weight when a fresh patch anchors the window; and a 'typical game' prior keeps small samples from pegging the scale. Because press reviews and Metacritic user aggregates describe the launch build, their weight decays as the game ages (3-year half-life after a 1-year grace). That's how a game that launched rough can outgrow its old reception once updates win players over. Reviews under 2h playtime (the refund window), non-Steam activations, and free copies are downweighted.

Mafia: The Old Country is a solid return to the series’ roots. Despite a few minor flaws, it delivers an engaging story that’s well worth experiencing. The game also packs in plenty of fan-service moments that longtime Mafia fans will definitely appreciate.

Mafia: The Old Country could easily have been phoned in but the effort is evident - it sincerely does its best, and its best is good enough. Will it make a huge mark on history? Unlikely. Is its “pseudopen” world a vestigial albatross? Absolutely. Did I enjoy it? Perfectly adequately.

Mafia: The Old Country is a game that undoubtedly has its problems and imperfections. It is not a perfect production, but it is definitely worth giving it a try. The Old Country may have a simple and unoriginal story, but the way it was written and executed deserves all the praise it gets. Following Enzo's story is truly engaging and can evoke a lot of emotion. It's simply a great gangster series that draws you in from the very first minutes.

The Conclusion: Studio Hangar 13 managed to return to us with a classic experience carrying a beautiful story, even if its events were predictable and some were provoking. The story was characterized by the interconnection of some events with the original trilogy and wonderful writing of the characters. However, the experience suffered from limited gameplay dominated by repetition and a linear approach, alongside a fluctuating technical level, despite the stunning graphics that showed Sicily and the mafia world in an amazing way. On the other hand, the audio and music stood out distinctively, making them one of the strongest elements of the game.

Wait for a heavy discount on this one and temper your expectations; The Old Country is an old dog with no new tricks.

Mafia: The Old Country isn't just another game about the mafia-it's a full-fledged journey into a cultural layer of history and cinema, filled with references to The Godfather and similar classics that seamlessly blend into the story and atmosphere. The game isn't perfect, but it's stylish, focused, and cinematic. If you've been missing that very kind of 12–14 hour "film-like" experience, enjoy such narratives, and don't mind a few technical rough edges, this one is worth picking up-titles like this are a rarity nowadays.

The fact that Mafia: The Old Country does little more than what it promises is not a bad thing. It is a linear action-adventure game, where the story takes precedence. And although its romantic premise may not appeal to everyone, it is told in an interesting and quality manner. But in 2025, especially after the previous installments, one would expect more than just a "minimal viable product." The entire game is unnecessarily linear; the missions are often uninteresting, the gameplay is at times shockingly uninspired, and more often than we would like, we felt that the developers were making fools of the players. Mafia: The Old Country is, at its core, an entertaining average game with some production quality that elevates its quality, but it remains average nonetheless.

The good old Mafia game, both in a positive and a negative way. All the changes and additions Hangar 13 tried to make in the third installment were thrown out, and we ended up with a very linear action game with an interesting plot and an unnecessary open world.

Compared to the finger-twisting meticulousness of, say, Grand Theft Auto V, this game is almost charming in its simplicity.

Mafia: Homecoming is undoubtedly a powerful narrative return to the series’ roots. It features beautiful Sicily, a cinematic story, and characters that will draw you in. The game’s atmosphere is powerful, and the Czech voice acting adds a unique charm. But all of this is held back by technical issues, an overly linear structure, and restrictive scripts that spoil an otherwise great experience. Mafia: Homecoming is like a beautiful vineyard behind a high fence. You know there’s delicious wine hidden inside, but the journey to get there isn’t nearly as enjoyable as it should be.

Mafia: The Old Country is not trying to be a GTA clone, but instead sets a smaller scale and focuses fully on what is most important to the series. An atmospheric, dark and tight story set in a memorable location, together with solid gameplay mechanics and fluid performance, is exactly what the series needed to get back on track.

Mafia: The Old Country is the best Mafia game yet. Foregoing some storytelling tropes and poor game design choices of its predecessors, tightening its gameplay, and telling the most gripping story in the franchise to date, capped off by outstanding performances by the whole cast and a looker to boot, Mafia: The Old Country shines amongst its siblings and is an offer you shouldn't refuse.
