How this score was computed

The VGC Score is a weighted blend on a press-comparable 0-100 quality scale. Steam approval rates are first calibrated (95% positive on Steam ≈ 89.5 quality, since Steam approval skews high). Press and tracked creator reviews each count ~2x a player review and share one cap against player evidence (creator buy/skip calls pool into an approval rate, calibrated like Steam approval); all-time sentiment is capped and halved (it's context, not verdict); reviews of the current build carry the most weight when a fresh patch anchors the window; and a 'typical game' prior keeps small samples from pegging the scale. Because press reviews and Metacritic user aggregates describe the launch build, their weight decays as the game ages (3-year half-life after a 1-year grace). That's how a game that launched rough can outgrow its old reception once updates win players over. Reviews under 2h playtime (the refund window), non-Steam activations, and free copies are downweighted.

“Mechwarrior 5: Clans” is a labor of love from fans by fans. You might not get some plot points due to its story being so embedded in Battletech Lore, but the action-packed missions and a departure from procedural generated maps makes it worth the time. Just don’t expect to learn everything from the get-go. It’s learning curve can be steep and you better get ready to lose a couple, or a lot of missions.

Developers of MechWarrior 5: Clans know their limitations and skills, and don’t cram unnecessary elements into the game. Instead they focus only on the things they know they can deliver. Clans has the best story in the history of the series, and gameplay-wise it’s like an upgraded Mercenaries. Christmas came early for true MechWarrior fans!

The more I sit with my feelings about Clans, the more I think Piranha is on to something. Perhaps this actually is what BattleTech always wants to be. Somewhere between a bad live action TV show and a bad children’s cartoon about war crimes is the fundamental joy of stomping around inside of big robots that tear through buildings like tissue paper and no one can be right, because everyone is wrong. I wish they’d honestly leaned more into the strengths of this game. The absurd vibes of BattleTech. Because when Clans actually does that, Piranha reminds me exactly of why BattleTech is so fucking cool.

Mechwarrior V: Clans is a standalone title that don't replace its predecessor but rather enriches the experience in a complementary way, and it's a significant addition to the saga.

Still, at the end of the day this is an approachable and enjoyable entry into a genre that doesn’t really get a lot of love these days. If they manage to optimize things enough to fix the performance issues you could probably consider it a 9 from me, but as it is I can only mostly recommend it.

MechWarrior 5: Clans trades the random missions of Mercenaries for a handcrafted campaign delivering high customization and tense strategic battles.

The tactical aspect of the game is also finicky. You can give your four squadmates orders, but only within a short radius of yourself, limiting their potential. Your choice is a map that doesn’t pause the action and is therefore useless in a fight, or a quick menu that takes up most of the screen and isn’t very quick, also making it a burden in fights. The first-person view is neat, and the ability to take control of your squadmate's mechs is novel, but these features aren't enough to shake the feeling your time would be better spent playing XCOM.

Mechwarrior 5: Clans is a fantastic addition to the Mechwarrior lineage, offering a good mix of an engaging storytelling, deep customization options and some seriously satisfying mech combat. While the PC version has some technical issues and the overall game has a bit of a learning curve, the overall experience is well worth it for fans and newcomers alike. And the fact that Clans is hitting gamepass is sure to garner some new Battletech fans to the fold, which is great so we can get some new games form this legendary mech series.

Mechwarrior 5: Clans does a lot of relatively new things for the series, and a whole lot more effort has gone into the polish and presentation of the game. The new changes aren't all for the better, and while I can respect that the game is meant to tell its own story, it comes at the expense of effectively removing all of the player's agency in influencing it. My idea of a perfect Mechwarrior game is some sort of middle ground between Mercs and Clans.

As mech games go, MechWarrior 5: Clans is an easy-to-recommend title full of action and drama. It may take itself too seriously, but this is still a brilliant sci-fi adventure.

MechWarriors 5: Clans abandons its roots and leans more towards arcade-style gameplay. And that's not a bad thing, but fans of the brand probably won't be super pleased.
