How this score was computed

The VGC Score is a weighted blend on a press-comparable 0-100 quality scale. Steam approval rates are first calibrated (95% positive on Steam ≈ 89.5 quality, since Steam approval skews high). Press and tracked creator reviews each count ~2x a player review and share one cap against player evidence (creator buy/skip calls pool into an approval rate, calibrated like Steam approval); all-time sentiment is capped and halved (it's context, not verdict); reviews of the current build carry the most weight when a fresh patch anchors the window; and a 'typical game' prior keeps small samples from pegging the scale. Because press reviews and Metacritic user aggregates describe the launch build, their weight decays as the game ages (3-year half-life after a 1-year grace). That's how a game that launched rough can outgrow its old reception once updates win players over. Reviews under 2h playtime (the refund window), non-Steam activations, and free copies are downweighted.

MACROSS’s unique approach to strategic shooting rather than spamming attacks pays off in the end because it is more satisfying in the long run. The kills feel satisfying, and having to engage multiple factions in the same campaign keeps things unique between missions. Excellent enemy design, solid shooting mechanics, multiple combat perspectives, cool soundtrack, and intense boss battles really make MACROSS an excellent shoot ‘em up. Whether you are a fan of the franchise or you are just getting into it, the new MACROSS -Shooting Insight- is the perfect title to experience the iconic anime in video game format. Highly recommended for fans of the anime in the West who were looking forward to getting their hands on this action-packed franchise.

MACROSS Shooting Insight is, ultimately, a rather average shoot ’em up, whose appeal stems mainly from the Macross franchise license, which brings with it familiar characters and music. It manages to entertain and, fortunately, is accessible to all fans regardless of their gaming skills. However, it suffers from the classic problem of video games that combine many different approaches to a single genre. It doesn’t truly excel at anything it attempts.

Strictly for the diehard shmup fans who just need another cheap-looking notch in their danmaku holster; nothing more.

Shooting Insight is a remarkably solid space shooter, both for Macross fans and shoot-'em-up players without any allegiance to the anime.

While I love the aesthetics and a chance to fly some “Robotech” fighters, the ponderous story and inconsistent shooting disappoint

If you're not a fan of the franchise and are just looking for a good shmup, I don't recommend it. There are much better and more affordable options on the market.

MACROSS -Shooting Insight- leaves a lot to be desired. Fans will adore the songs and interactions but a simple plot and lacking extras make this a difficult recommendation.

But an oftentimes inscrutable, poorly told story is unlikely to win over any new fans. I'll also note that in Japan, all content that featured the cast of the original Super Dimension Fortress Macross was contained to a separate DLC. Currently that DLC is not available in this release, and seems unlikely to become so in the future, due to licensing issues. Still I'll take what I can get, and it is great to see this series making an appearance at all.

MACROSS -Shooting Insight- is a milquetoast shooter that wouldn’t be so offensive if it was priced more appropriately.

balancing issues, uninspired presentation, and reliance on accessibility features to offset its steep difficulty, Macross Shooting Insight struggles to live up to the potential of the Macross franchise. While it has some creative ideas in blending multiple shooting styles, the execution feels uneven. Fans of Macross may find some enjoyment in seeing their favorite ships and characters together, but as a shmup, it shakes things up but doesn’t quite hit the mark.
