How this score was computed
The VGC Score is a weighted blend on a press-comparable 0-100 quality scale. Steam approval rates are first calibrated (95% positive on Steam ≈ 89.5 quality, since Steam approval skews high). Press and tracked creator reviews each count ~2x a player review and share one cap against player evidence (creator buy/skip calls pool into an approval rate, calibrated like Steam approval); all-time sentiment is capped and halved (it's context, not verdict); reviews of the current build carry the most weight when a fresh patch anchors the window; and a 'typical game' prior keeps small samples from pegging the scale. Because press reviews and Metacritic user aggregates describe the launch build, their weight decays as the game ages (3-year half-life after a 1-year grace). That's how a game that launched rough can outgrow its old reception once updates win players over. Reviews under 2h playtime (the refund window), non-Steam activations, and free copies are downweighted.
| Component | Positive | Quality (0-100) | Weight (pseudo-reviews) |

| Metacritic user ratings | – | – | 0 |
| Post-patch Steam reviews (trust-weighted) | 75% | 71 | 76 |

“Hollowbody deserves a spot beside the best of the PlayStation 2-era Silent Hill games. In its gameplay, story, and aesthetics, Hollowbody pays homage to its inspiration while putting clever twists on the genre that Silent Hill pioneered. It may not be the most original, but it is undoubtedly one of the best survival horror games of 2024.”

“Hollowbody is a good game that feels even more impressive when you realize that one person pulled all the strings to bring it to life. Hamley is an incredible talent whose attempt at replicating the PS2 era of horror slots in near-perfectly with its inspirations. It's flawed, but some of the best horror games are, too, and the vibes are worth sinking into no matter what.”

“Hollowbody may become a bit rote halfway through the campaign, but what it lacks in scares and innovative gameplay is more than made up for with an atmospheric world, great sound design and multiple endings, all of which I wanted to see. Hollowbody hits all the beats of early survival horror games to a tee, making it a perfect, short-lived treat for retro-style game lovers.”

“By pushing itself into the same room as the classics and deliberately evoking them, Hollowbody does itself a disservice.”

“Hollowbody deserves the attention of any fan of classic survival horror. The game manages to capture the essence of the great titles of the 90s with great skill.”

“I couldn't completely love it, but I can't say it fundamentally disappointed me either: Hollowbody delivers exactly what it promises. It's a survival horror game with a PS2 feel, one that wants to make you feel vulnerable and disoriented in a city that doesn't want you to survive, and it succeeds for long stretches with a coherence that many games with much larger budgets fail to maintain. If you grew up with the first Silent Hill games, with Alone in the Dark: The New Nightmare, with those early-millennium survival horror games that demanded patience and delivered pure tension in return, you'll find something here worth the price of admission (which was affordable, by the way). If, on the other hand, you're accustomed to a contemporary feel, or if the mechanical flaws detract from immersion rather than add difficulty, you'll probably leave the exclusion zone feeling more frustrated than satisfied. As I did, if I may say so. Hollowbody is a game that deserves to exist and deserves attention. However, it does not deserve to be forgiven for flaws that could have been smoothed out further, with a little more time, or perhaps just a few more handfuls of honest feedback.”

“Inspired by classic survival horror games, Hollowbody knows how to appeal to nostalgic players with its fixed camera angles and backtracking mechanics. However, it falls short by delivering an unimpactful story and uninspired enemies, failing to create the level of tension that is essential for the genre.”

“Hollowbody offers an intriguing biopunk setting but fails to engage players due to clunky gameplay, underwhelming sound design, and the lack of a gripping story.”

“The truth is, however, that most of the flaws or shortcomings that usually go hand in hand with the productions of the era that *Hollowbody* is trying to emulate can easily be overlooked if the content is of high quality, and fortunately, that is the case here.”

“Hollowbody is a survival horror game that takes players back to the nostalgic era of classic PS2 horror games. Inspired by titles like Silent Hill 2, the game offers psychological horror, challenging puzzles, and intense combat, all accompanied by atmospheric audiovisual cues. It captures the essence of survival horror while introducing modern conveniences that’ll have veteran players coming back for more.”

“While Hollowbody is a beautifully designed survival horror game visual and audio-wise, its clunky controls and camera which has a mind of its own made it very frustrating to play.”

“Hollowbody is an impressive horror game that reminded me of what I loved and hated about the iconic games of the past. It combines elements of the Resident Evil and Silent Hill series. It is not very extensive, but the story is retold in an interesting way.”
