How this score was computed
The VGC Score is a weighted blend on a press-comparable 0-100 quality scale. Steam approval rates are first calibrated (95% positive on Steam ≈ 89.5 quality, since Steam approval skews high). Press and tracked creator reviews each count ~2x a player review and share one cap against player evidence (creator buy/skip calls pool into an approval rate, calibrated like Steam approval); all-time sentiment is capped and halved (it's context, not verdict); reviews of the current build carry the most weight when a fresh patch anchors the window; and a 'typical game' prior keeps small samples from pegging the scale. Because press reviews and Metacritic user aggregates describe the launch build, their weight decays as the game ages (3-year half-life after a 1-year grace). That's how a game that launched rough can outgrow its old reception once updates win players over. Reviews under 2h playtime (the refund window), non-Steam activations, and free copies are downweighted.

“Total Chaos originally began as a mod for the popular FPS Doom II, which first appeared on monitors in 2018. Seven years after its release, it has been released as a full-fledged game, offering an unmistakable experience full of fear, sweat, and, above all, blood. But this isn’t a cold-blooded horror game full of predictable jump scares and a meaningless narrative. This action-survival game embodies the best that psychological horror has to offer and makes the most of its potential. I could talk at length about its qualities. You have to play it yourself and see for yourself just how terrifying and tragic the story actually is.”

“Total Chaos is a survival horror that treats fear as a constant condition, rejecting immediate shock and spectacle in favor of atmosphere, silence, and psychological tension. The game keeps the player in a permanent state of alert through oppressive environments, empty spaces, and distant, ambiguous sounds, making subtraction its primary expressive tool. Its identity emerges most clearly through its aesthetic, which reworks a retro visual language into something grimy and corroded: visual distortion, grain, and decay turn Fort Oasis into a hostile, decomposing place, closer to a diseased organism than a simple setting. This sense of alienation carries over into the gameplay, deliberately slow and punitive, built around limited resources, heavy combat, and constant choices between confronting danger or avoiding it. Despite some technical roughness and a deliberately stretched pace that may divide players, Total Chaos stands out for the coherence of its vision and for an audiovisual presentation with strong impact, supported by fragmented and ambiguous environmental storytelling. It is not a game designed to appeal to everyone, but it leaves a lasting impression on those who seek a more introspective, oppressive form of horror, focused on atmosphere rather than spectacle.”

“Total Chaos is one of the most intense horror games I’ve had the chance to play in a very long time. The atmosphere is incredibly strong, the enemies are creative and unsettling, and the survival elements are implemented exceptionally well. If you’re not easily scared and believe you can make your way through Fort Oasis and overcome all of its challenges, I definitely recommend giving this game a try.”

“Total Chaos is a gripping survival horror that plays like Doom but feels like the offspring of Silent Hill’s eerie landscapes and Resident Evil’s tense, confined settings. Its ability to tell most of its roughly 20-hour story mostly through gameplay alone is a rare feat, especially given its modest price tag. It’s easily one of the most unique experiences that 2025 has to offer.”

“Total Chaos is a very inconsistent experience that I like far more than I don't, one encounter aside. The atmosphere is incredibly well done with some interesting enemy designs and a fairly engaging combat system that reminded me of Condemned: Criminal Origins. With a robust crafting system and rewards for exploration, there was always a reason for discovering secrets and going off the beaten path. While some may be put off by its weak AI and method of storytelling, Total Chaos is certainly worth a look, given its inclusion in Xbox Game Pass.”
