How this score was computed

The VGC Score is a weighted blend on a press-comparable 0-100 quality scale. Steam approval rates are first calibrated (95% positive on Steam ≈ 89.5 quality, since Steam approval skews high). Press and tracked creator reviews each count ~2x a player review and share one cap against player evidence (creator buy/skip calls pool into an approval rate, calibrated like Steam approval); all-time sentiment is capped and halved (it's context, not verdict); reviews of the current build carry the most weight when a fresh patch anchors the window; and a 'typical game' prior keeps small samples from pegging the scale. Because press reviews and Metacritic user aggregates describe the launch build, their weight decays as the game ages (3-year half-life after a 1-year grace). That's how a game that launched rough can outgrow its old reception once updates win players over. Reviews under 2h playtime (the refund window), non-Steam activations, and free copies are downweighted.

I think that, perhaps, roguelite isn’t a great genre for Swery and Suda to be collaborating on. I get the feeling that the genre was just a means to get an idea that they put together across. That might be okay if the roguelite was at least enjoyable or benign, but it’s really unpleasant to play. The slow, gluey controls, repetitive enemies and environments, and overall clunkiness turn it into a really abrasive experience. On one hand, I hope this isn’t the last we see of Justine and Dr. Carnival. On the other, I kind of just want to forget this ever happened.

Hotel Barcelona doesn't motivate players to endure or dig through this pile of «brilliant ideas» from Suda 51 and SWERY.

Hotel Barcelona is exactly what it was meant to be: chaotic, brilliant, brutally difficult, and deeply original. It’s a harmonious synthesis of both masters’ styles, Suda51 brings punk-inspired, action-packed energy and surrealist symbolism, while Swery adds dark, psychological depth and strangely human perversions. This game isn’t for everyone. Its high difficulty and the need to strategically use death and create Slasher Phantoms require patience and a willingness to learn from your own failures. Roguelike elements combined with tactical 2.5D combat create a unique gameplay loop where you become stronger with every failure, literally.

Hotel Barcelona is a bold and eccentric roguelite that blends over-the-top violence, dark humor, and inventive mechanics. Permanent upgrades, ghostly help from past runs, and bizarre bosses give it a distinct identity. Despite some design limits in combat and a short story, it succeeds in standing out in a highly competitive genre.

HOTEL BARCELONA is an experience as intriguing as the hotel itself and its residents. On the one hand, there are moments that are super fun, followed by others that leave us a little frustrated.

I'm convinced the game will find its audience, and I don't feel I can condemn it completely. However, if you analyze the pure gameplay, even the The Dishwasher series, which will soon be of age, remains a benchmark in terms of fluidity and precision. This comparison shows how far behind the current title is on a fundamental aspect. I won't mention games like Dead Cells and Rogue Legacy 2, not out of forgetfulness, but because they belong to another category. Any comparison with the title in question would be not only inappropriate but also an insult to their impeccable design.

Hotel Barcelona is a 2.5D side-scrolling action roguelite and a creative collaboration between two of Japan's most eccentric game directors, Goichi "SUDA51" Suda (known for No More Heroes) and Hidetaka "Swery65" Suehiro (known for Deadly Premonition). It was released on September 26, 2025, and is currently available on Steam, Xbox, and PlayStation 5.

Hotel Barcelona is rough, unfair, and buggy but also charming, challenging and fun - Suda51 and SWERY are an acquired taste but fans will relish this bold and bizarre roguelite.

Hotel Barcelona by Suda51 and Swery65 has style, but it's seriously lacking in substance.

Powered by classic horror flicks, absurd anime cutscenes and a truly unhinged storyline full of murderers, this bloodfest is absolutely not for the faint of heart. It’s loud, it’s wacky, and it is not afraid to commit to the bit. Off-the-rails videogame concepts might not be new, but the way it is tied up here certainly feels like one of the unique video games to exist in the current gaming landscape, let alone 2025. SUDA51 has stated that this is one of his finest achievements, and you know what? I believe it.

Swery and Suda together! What could possibly go wrong? Well, unfortunately, quite a lot of things. It’s just a true shame that personality, good music and horror movie references alone doesn’t make for a good gameplay experience. Maybe masochists and roguelite veterans will get more out of this, but for me it fell disappointingly flat. Here’s hoping that Suda’s next epic will deliver on its promises better next year.
