How this score was computed
The VGC Score is a weighted blend on a press-comparable 0-100 quality scale. Steam approval rates are first calibrated (95% positive on Steam ≈ 89.5 quality, since Steam approval skews high). Press and tracked creator reviews each count ~2x a player review and share one cap against player evidence (creator buy/skip calls pool into an approval rate, calibrated like Steam approval); all-time sentiment is capped and halved (it's context, not verdict); reviews of the current build carry the most weight when a fresh patch anchors the window; and a 'typical game' prior keeps small samples from pegging the scale. Because press reviews and Metacritic user aggregates describe the launch build, their weight decays as the game ages (3-year half-life after a 1-year grace). That's how a game that launched rough can outgrow its old reception once updates win players over. Reviews under 2h playtime (the refund window), non-Steam activations, and free copies are downweighted.

“Earth Defense Force 6 is a big and loud culmination of everything that the series had to offer up until now. If the game feels a bit pricey, then just wait for the sale. And if you have an itch to kill some bugs right about now, then just buy one of the previous games, they are pretty good as well.”

“Earth Defense Force 6 is more of the same, in the best way possible. It can get tedious at times, and it looks more like a PS3 game than a PS5 game, but it delivers all the chills, thrills, and spills you'd expect from the franchise.”

“Fundamentally, Earth Defence Force 6 is 'more of the same' as 5, with an improved story and some very slight changes. The darker story is much more welcome, and the new enemies and weapons give players more variety. Gameplay wise it is going to be nearly the same as the last main entry, with the pretty cool narrative style of the opening levels. It's not going to blow anyone away, but it's very much in the vein of fun that will suck the hours away.”

“Earth Defense Force 6 brings the series back and better than ever. It offers the same bug-smashing action with a time travel twist in the tale. Classes remain as satisfying as ever and multiplayer spreads the joy. Don't go in expecting a graphical powerhouse, though.”

“Earth Defense Force 6 remains as corny and bombastic as ever with all types of weapons to take down hoards of foes in what remains a fun and chaotic experience that feels a bit stuck in the past.”

“D3 Publisher used to be a budget publisher and EDF was a standout amongst their releases, but at this point there’s too much EDF for the sake of EDF without any good reason for its existence and at too high of a price point. Like I just can’t put in the effort to care anymore if glorified DLC and patches are going to be released as a brand-new numbered entry at full price.”

“In the end, Earth Defense Force 6 maintains the status quo set by Earth Defense Force 5. The initial tone might be an immediate cause for concern, but the quick pivot to more familiar elements reinforces the idea that the team still understands what makes the game appealing. The gameplay changes are mostly miniscule to the point where only the keen-eyed will notice too many things different beyond the bestiary. With a presentation that also remains unchanged, the game lives up to the ideal that it really is "more of the same." That's exactly what most fans want, and they'll certainly be most excited to get their hands on this game. For those hoping for some kind of evolution that doesn't rob the game of what made it a cult hit, there is little hope of that happening anytime soon, considering how divisive most of the past entries were.”

“Earth Defense Force 6 provides near-endless excitement and fun. I'm having a total blast after 75+ hours already logged and not one ounce of fatigue has set in.”

“EDF 6 is, without a doubt, the very best entry in the series so far. Tremendous fun from top to bottom, from beginning to end, it is everything an EDF fan could have hoped for.”

“It's the same old EDF in terms of graphics, gameplay, and the swarm of (mostly intentional) bugs but online co-op and a mountain of content means it still holds a special charm.”

“Earth Defense Force 6 is big, dumb co-op fun and a masterclass in asset recycling.”

“Earth Defense Force 6 distinguishes itself as the most compelling entry in the series, successfully drawing me back into its captivating gameplay loop, a feat that previous titles had failed to achieve.”
