How this score was computed

The VGC Score is a weighted blend on a press-comparable 0-100 quality scale. Steam approval rates are first calibrated (95% positive on Steam ≈ 89.5 quality, since Steam approval skews high). Press and tracked creator reviews each count ~2x a player review and share one cap against player evidence (creator buy/skip calls pool into an approval rate, calibrated like Steam approval); all-time sentiment is capped and halved (it's context, not verdict); reviews of the current build carry the most weight when a fresh patch anchors the window; and a 'typical game' prior keeps small samples from pegging the scale. Because press reviews and Metacritic user aggregates describe the launch build, their weight decays as the game ages (3-year half-life after a 1-year grace). That's how a game that launched rough can outgrow its old reception once updates win players over. Reviews under 2h playtime (the refund window), non-Steam activations, and free copies are downweighted.

Though it lacks the teeth and depth of Slay the Spire, it still provides a great package with a good deal of replayability.

Yet another take on the concept of a roguelike deckbuilder, which plays well, but lacks the oomph of originality some of its peers possess

Overall, Fairy Tail Dungeons is a solid game. Good gameplay and soundtrack, fun characters, and a decent story. If this was an original game without the Fairy Tail nostalgia, it would still be solid.

Every element of Fairy Tail Dungeons has a certain charm to it, bolstered by the retro indie aesthetic that harkened me back to the classic era of anime games. The charms quickly fade, however. The turn-based mechanic is interesting, but it quickly drags on in the repetition of trying to bolster my characters for the coming boss fight ahead. The boss fights feel like the absolute worst example of card-battling RNG.

Amidst a string of lackluster Fairy Tail games, FAIRY TAIL: DUNGEONS breaks the mold, delivering an experience that truly does the series justice. It’s safe to say this is the best Fairy Tail game out there right now. While it’s not without its flaws, the captivating deckbuilding gameplay more than compensates, offering fans countless hours of fun while capturing the true spirit of the guild.

Fairy Tail: Dungeons is not necessarily a good game to pick up if you aren’t familiar with the roguelike card battler genre, but it is a decent product for Fairy Tail fans and it does enough with its premise to be fun for a few hours, even if lacking in content.

An entertaining experience for fans of the series and deck-builder enthusiasts. While it lacks the strategic depth of some similar titles, it remains engaging and worthwhile. Adding more characters, improving enemy variety, increasing tactical options, and better balancing the upgrade system could have made this game a more memorable experience.

Overall, Fairy Tail: Dungeons is a fun little romp around for a while. It’s not a game I see myself coming back to too often as there are just a lot of Roguelike games that do various aspects of its gameplay better, but it’s still a fun way to spend a few hours as you search around for some of your favourite characters.

FAIRY TAIL: DUNGEONS seemed like an honest game to me, but it proved to be more than that with a great execution of most of the ideas presented. Kodansha and Hiro Mashima did a great job curating this project for funding, giving young developers the chance to shine.

It wouldn’t be wrong to label Fairy Tail: Dungeons as Baby’s First Roguelike, though that might be selling the surprisingly crunchy gameplay experience short. Veterans have plenty to dig into, even if they might ultimately breeze through it. It can also be an entertaining entry point into the niche roguelike genre, which can be an acquired taste. I wish there were more of it, so here’s hoping there will be someday.

Fairy Tail Dungeons creatively adapts the beloved Fairy Tail anime series into a compelling game experience. With its unique gameplay mechanics, character-driven story, and polished visuals, the game offers fans a fresh take on the Fairy Tail universe. While the dungeon design can feel repetitive, the engaging combat and deckbuilding elements make up for it, providing an enjoyable and addictive experience for players. Fairy Tail Dungeons is a must-try for fans of the series and those looking for a unique indie game.
