How this score was computed
The VGC Score is a weighted blend on a press-comparable 0-100 quality scale. Steam approval rates are first calibrated (95% positive on Steam ≈ 89.5 quality, since Steam approval skews high). Press and tracked creator reviews each count ~2x a player review and share one cap against player evidence (creator buy/skip calls pool into an approval rate, calibrated like Steam approval); all-time sentiment is capped and halved (it's context, not verdict); reviews of the current build carry the most weight when a fresh patch anchors the window; and a 'typical game' prior keeps small samples from pegging the scale. Because press reviews and Metacritic user aggregates describe the launch build, their weight decays as the game ages (3-year half-life after a 1-year grace). That's how a game that launched rough can outgrow its old reception once updates win players over. Reviews under 2h playtime (the refund window), non-Steam activations, and free copies are downweighted.

“Blizzard really catered both to those who enjoy single-player experiences, and those eager for some good old multiplayer fun. Seriously, break the piggy bank and go buy this game. Because Blizzard, apparently, did it again, they remembered how to make great games that we will be playing for months on end. Maybe even years.”

“Even though the old guard of Blizzard Entertainment is no more, the team under Rod Fergusson's leadership managed to create something everyone was hoping for - a true successor to the legendary Diablo II.”

“Diablo IV brings a more thoughtful story, a darker atmosphere, and a beautiful open world. It takes a little from each of the previous titles in the series to bring the best of each, albeit without any visible innovation. Diablo IV still has its flaws and will be too simple for some, yet its gameplay brings fun for dozens of hours.”

“While the plethora of ugly scandals hanging over Activision Blizzard has been frustratingly overlooked by the gaming public, it will be difficult for most to overlook the aggressive monetization of Diablo IV. In addition to different (and expensive) editions of the game that allowed earlier play and a shop that sells cosmetic items, Diablo IV has three different Battle Passes and two expansions in the works. It’s unnecessary, and taken alongside major updates that have already dramatically changed how some of the classes function, Diablo IV stands on unsteady ground despite possessing a strong foundation, far above its series forebearers.”

“Diablo IV takes the series back to its roots, though its mechanics build on the previous installment and the mobile game Diablo Immortal. For those who want to enjoy a fantastical tale of temptation toward evil and also find the ARPG genre accessible, it offers a well-crafted campaign with a high degree of replay value. Conversely, for those primarily interested in action and competitive play, it offers more or less only what we’ve seen before; innovations are often met with negative or mixed reactions. Only time will tell how many loyal players Blizzard can retain. Unfortunately, everything is undermined by the paid battle pass and the overall aggressive monetization that Blizzard applies to in-game items.”

“If you're in the mood to slay blood-lusting demons with an unhealthy dose of loot-clicking, Diablo IV is perfect for you. The sequel doesn't reinvent the dungeon-crawling space in any way, but borrows ideas to offer intensely frenetic combat, robust progression, and totally knocks it out of the park with its dark, sacrilegious themes that turn its sprawling open world into literal hell. The tight enemy scaling is certainly a downside, but Blizzard evens it out with diverse classes that synergise uniquely with abilities, making encounters increasingly thrilling. The presence of microtransactions, albeit cosmetic-only, is a sour sight and the narrative would've surely improved with better pacing. Overall though, it's devilishly addictive!”

“Diablo IV does not alter or revolutionize the two-decades-old formula but polishes it instead. While Blizzard admittedly ‘’played it safe’’, we can't deny it's a fantastic product that's easy to recommend. In its current state, it's one of the greatest entries in the series and by far the one with the best story. If microtransactions aren’t introduced later, Diablo IV will remain an amazing title to play for years to come.”

“A superb game with a faint game-as-a-service scent, packed with gratifying content. Diablo 4 appears to be the top hack'n'slash available. As someone deeply familiar with previous Diablo iterations, Divine Divinity, and a touch of Grim Dawn, this is undoubtedly the finest hack'n'slash for me.”

“Diablo 4 is a masterpiece. It's the culmination of decades of ARPG refinement and evolution, and it manages to pay homage to the IP's legendary namesake while successfully integrating modern RPG elements.”

“Diablo 4 is definitely intuitive, easy to understand for new players and great fun to play, especially in multiplayer but highly enjoyable in single player as well. Blizzard has done a great job in creating a truly satisfying game world, thanks to its campaign mode and how it creates synergy with everything in the Endgame.”

“[Diablo 4] looks and feels great to play, it's full of content without being way too overburdened with systems and age-old mechanics, it's accessible but also gets really hard and challenging for action RPG standards, and it's really great with more people in your party, with a good amount of classes to play around with and tailor to your playstyle. A highly-polished loot-filled gateway drug for newbies and veterans alike; not terribly innovative but incredibly fun to get into.”

“The new release of Diablo 4 has exceeded expectations by providing an engaging and dark experience that fans of the franchise have been eagerly waiting for. With its improved gameplay mechanics, often stunning visuals, a wide range of multiplayer options, and extensive endgame content, Diablo 4 has cemented its position as one of the best action RPGs currently available.”
