How this score was computed
The VGC Score is a weighted blend on a press-comparable 0-100 quality scale. Steam approval rates are first calibrated (95% positive on Steam ≈ 89.5 quality, since Steam approval skews high). Press and tracked creator reviews each count ~2x a player review and share one cap against player evidence (creator buy/skip calls pool into an approval rate, calibrated like Steam approval); all-time sentiment is capped and halved (it's context, not verdict); reviews of the current build carry the most weight when a fresh patch anchors the window; and a 'typical game' prior keeps small samples from pegging the scale. Because press reviews and Metacritic user aggregates describe the launch build, their weight decays as the game ages (3-year half-life after a 1-year grace). That's how a game that launched rough can outgrow its old reception once updates win players over. Reviews under 2h playtime (the refund window), non-Steam activations, and free copies are downweighted.

| Metacritic user ratings | – | 85 | 15 |
| Post-patch Steam reviews (trust-weighted) | 93% | 88 | 247 |

“The developers at Enhance and Monstars Inc. have once again delivered a truly successful production that is a lot of fun to play. I won't hide the fact that Lumines Arise didn't draw me in as much as the legendary Tetris, but it's still a solid title that can entertain and give a lot of satisfaction. Most importantly, it's a real feast for the eyes and ears, making every minute spent with this game magical. It looks beautiful, works very well, and fans of character customization will certainly have no complaints.”

“This is Lumines in its most perfect, evolved form.”

“Lumines Arise on PS5 is exactly the kind of follow-up that a game like Tetris Effect deserved to have at its side: a companion piece that riffs on the same synaesthetic ethos but leans into its own identity as a more aggressive, combo-hungry block puzzler. Even without strapping on a PSVR2 headset, this flatscreen version is a gorgeous, absorbing way to lose an hour to rhythm and light, backed by a generous suite of modes and some of the best audiovisual design in the genre.”

“I’d say with confidence that Mizuguchi and the Enhance team have once again knocked it out of the park here. If you’re looking for a way to drop some blocks whilst wringing emotion from your heart, you can’t go wrong with this one.”

“Lumines: Arise is a simple game, but what it does, it does exceedingly well. For a game about making squares and surviving as long as you can, it makes that loop so compelling that it’s hard to put it down. It has insane visuals and an amazing soundtrack that Enhance-s (get it?) the experience. However, for some people’s brains, that overstimulation could be a little too much. On a handful of stages, I was no longer one with the game, but I was fighting against it, and that’s a damn shame.”

“[I]t's been ages since we've seen a puzzle game this beautiful since, well, Tetris Effect. Lumines Arise is simple yet deep with its tried-and-true 2x2 block-clearing mechanics, it has a few modes that not only educate you on playing the game better but also some co-op and competitive flair, and most importantly, it's a beauty to behold and listen to.”

“Lumines Arise, its music, and weirdest levels will stick in my mind for years to come, to the point where I see it being my preferred puzzle game of not just this year, but the foreseeable future”

“Following up on the brilliant Tetris Effect was no easy feat, but Enhance has done it with Lumines Arise. At its core is an excellent puzzle game with lots of depth, and mechanics that gel perfectly with the emphasis on music and spectacular visuals. It's jam-packed with fun features that provide so many different ways to play, including series-best multiplayer and a great range of challenge modes. There are some very minor gripes if we're being really picky, but fans can rest assured that this is the big, flashy comeback Lumines deserves.”

“Lumines Arise takes a now-iconic formula and revamps it in a way that truly stimulates the senses. When you’re in a flow-state, headphones in, matching blocks, vibing with the gorgeous soundtrack and being mesmerised by the dazzling visuals, time simply melts away. It’s the most diverse and interesting the series has ever been, punctuated by a killer tracklist from its talented composers. Sure to be a regular puzzler to pick up in anybody’s library, there’s simply nothing else quite like Lumines Arise.”
