How this score was computed

The VGC Score is a weighted blend on a press-comparable 0-100 quality scale. Steam approval rates are first calibrated (95% positive on Steam ≈ 89.5 quality, since Steam approval skews high). Press and tracked creator reviews each count ~2x a player review and share one cap against player evidence (creator buy/skip calls pool into an approval rate, calibrated like Steam approval); all-time sentiment is capped and halved (it's context, not verdict); reviews of the current build carry the most weight when a fresh patch anchors the window; and a 'typical game' prior keeps small samples from pegging the scale. Because press reviews and Metacritic user aggregates describe the launch build, their weight decays as the game ages (3-year half-life after a 1-year grace). That's how a game that launched rough can outgrow its old reception once updates win players over. Reviews under 2h playtime (the refund window), non-Steam activations, and free copies are downweighted.

In the '80s and '90s, Carmen Sandiego was interesting because there wasn't a ton of content about the world that was made for children. How else were we to learn about continents and cultures without accidentally stumbling upon the horrors of this planet and its peoples? However, with millions of hours of free, great kid-specific content on the internet these days, I'd be hard-pressed to know why anyone would spend money on this.

While the game has had a graphical upheaval on PC and consoles, it’s still the exact same game copy and pasted onto a different system, but charged at a premium rate. I cannot, in good faith, recommend this one on anything but mobile when the experience is the exact same. Save your money, steer clear of this console and PC port and just get this on mobile instead.

Taken as a whole game, Carmen Sandiego is a perfectly cromulent romp despite its relative simplicity. Slipping into familiar trappings isn’t always a bad thing, especially when you’re aiming to make a return like this. While not quite a triumphant return to the gaming space, it’s definitely a welcome one. I like to think that there’s still a place in the gaming world for The World’s Greatest Thief. So seeing her land on her feet like this is a welcome surprise. Carmen isn’t one to rest on her laurels, so I hope this isn’t the last we see of her.

The return of Carmen Sandiego is always very welcome in video games, but we need to emphasize here that it is an educational game aimed at children.

Narrowing down suspects based on clues and then hunting them down is neat and there is some educational value to this game… just maybe save yourself $30 and use your Netflix account to play it on mobile.

The Netflix themed Carmen Sandiego starts strong but soon descends into repetition and tedious progression. And endless airport codes.

Carmen Sandiego is a solid educational journey worth playing in short bursts. While it's an enjoyable and interesting experience, particularly for younger players and nostalgic aficionados, its simplicity and content gaps may leave some wanting more.

Carmen Sandiego is such a nostalgic hit in the heart, and it's great that there's a new game for a new generation to enjoy. It's a shame that there are inconsistencies; including not much accessibility for those who need it, and a lack of voice-overs. There is something to love about this new iteration of Carmen Sandiego, though. The 2D graphics in the ACME files can be downright beautiful. But overall, it's pretty disappointing, especially considering this game is essentially a port of a free(ish) mobile game, slapped with a $50AUD price tag and without the final chapter included. Hopefull,y we can see Sandiego and crew in better adventures sometime soon.

Carmen Sandiego makes a triumphant return, offering a fresh twist on the formula by placing you in the role of the elusive thief rather than the detective chasing her. Whether you’re deciphering clues, tailing suspects, or using Carmen’s signature gadgets, there’s always something to keep you engaged as you unravel V.I.L.E.’s latest scheme.

Carmen Sandiego gives you the master thief experience with a sprinkling of educational content, even if it can be too easy at times.

This globe-trotting adventure can err on the side of being too simplistic, but with amazing scenery and fun puzzles, it's a solid update to the classic Carmen formula nonetheless.
