How this score was computed

The VGC Score is a weighted blend on a press-comparable 0-100 quality scale. Steam approval rates are first calibrated (95% positive on Steam ≈ 89.5 quality, since Steam approval skews high). Press and tracked creator reviews each count ~2x a player review and share one cap against player evidence (creator buy/skip calls pool into an approval rate, calibrated like Steam approval); all-time sentiment is capped and halved (it's context, not verdict); reviews of the current build carry the most weight when a fresh patch anchors the window; and a 'typical game' prior keeps small samples from pegging the scale. Because press reviews and Metacritic user aggregates describe the launch build, their weight decays as the game ages (3-year half-life after a 1-year grace). That's how a game that launched rough can outgrow its old reception once updates win players over. Reviews under 2h playtime (the refund window), non-Steam activations, and free copies are downweighted.

The game Gears of War returns in an enhanced version after nearly twenty years, with a graphically improved experience and performance reaching 120 frames with 4K resolution, making returning to the old versions almost impossible. The story remains a strong introduction to the series' events, and the revolutionary gameplay style that inspired many shooter games continues here with greater smoothness, along with a multiplayer mode that includes the favorite classic modes and maps. Despite some flaws such as frame drops in cinematic scenes, this version remains the best and most complete way to go through the experience, whether you are a fan of the series or trying it for the first time.

Despite a number of flaws, Gears of War remains an excellent game with polished gameplay. The same can be said about the Ultimate Edition. As for Gears of War: Reloaded, this re-release is worth recommending to new players on PlayStation 5.

Gears of War: Reloaded isn’t the triumphant comeback fans might have hoped for, but rather a sobering reminder that what worked twenty years ago doesn’t quite cut it today. Instead of settling for a visual touch-up, Microsoft could have invested in a complete remake, one worthy of the series’ twentieth anniversary and capable of winning over even PlayStation audiences. What we get instead is a slightly polished relic: a pleasant dose of nostalgia for Game Pass subscribers, but hardly a compelling reason for newcomers to experience the original Gears.

Gears of War returns in a new remaster that allows us to look back on one of the modern classics in gaming history while also marking its debut on PlayStation. It's an excellent opportunity to revisit the origins of a formula that remains incredibly popular today. However, I think it's much more enjoyable if you treat it as a piece of history rather than a totally new experience. For better or worse, it's the classic Gears of War experience I remember from two decades ago.

Gears of War Reloaded is a well made remaster, but I was hoping for a whole trilogy. Still, it does not matter as much, I had lots of fun. After all, this is the original Gears of War with all the good and bad that comes with it. And if you own a PS5, you simply have to play.

Gears of War: Reloaded is definitely a good remaster, that takes all the most iconic aspects of the first Gears and re-presents them with spectacular graphics and completely upgraded sound. However, alongside good things, the game also carries with it the inconsistency of some gameplay dynamics of original titles.

Rating Gears of War: Reloaded isn’t easy. The gameplay is still solid, fun, and true to the original, delivering the physicality and tactical tension that made the series famous. However, most of the updates are technical or cosmetic, better graphics, cross-play, and a few extra maps aren’t enough to make it a must-have for longtime fans. Reloaded feels more like a way to cash in on nostalgia, introduce the franchise to PlayStation players and new audiences, and keep the series alive until the next entry, rather than a true new release. Great for what it is, but hard to recommend at full price to veterans.

Gears of War: Reloaded is, without a doubt, the best way to relive the origins of Marcus Fenix and his squad. Its gameplay remains solid and impactful, demonstrating why it became a benchmark in its genre.

While Gears of War: Ultimate Edition launched a decade ago, Gears of War: Reloaded feels like the actual ultimate way to experience this timeless classic that has aged well and looks on par with many modern games due to its visual and gameplay enhancements.

Gears of War: Reloaded is perfect for anyone who wants to revisit the roots of the cover shooter - still an enjoyable experience, even if its age is hard to miss.

Gears of War Reloaded introduces some noticeable improvements here and there, but in my opinion, they’re not enough, especially if you’ve already played the Ultimate Edition released back in 2015. For longtime fans who have experienced both the original and the remaster, Reloaded won’t offer much that feels new. However, if you’re completely new to the series, say, primarily a PlayStation player, Gears of War Reloaded delivers a significant graphical boost along with an enjoyable gameplay experience.

Gears of War: Reloaded coming to PlayStation represents a big step forward for the industry, but underneath all the visual and performance tweaks is still the same immensely fun game at its core.
