How this score was computed
The VGC Score is a weighted blend on a press-comparable 0-100 quality scale. Steam approval rates are first calibrated (95% positive on Steam ≈ 89.5 quality, since Steam approval skews high). Press and tracked creator reviews each count ~2x a player review and share one cap against player evidence (creator buy/skip calls pool into an approval rate, calibrated like Steam approval); all-time sentiment is capped and halved (it's context, not verdict); reviews of the current build carry the most weight when a fresh patch anchors the window; and a 'typical game' prior keeps small samples from pegging the scale. Because press reviews and Metacritic user aggregates describe the launch build, their weight decays as the game ages (3-year half-life after a 1-year grace). That's how a game that launched rough can outgrow its old reception once updates win players over. Reviews under 2h playtime (the refund window), non-Steam activations, and free copies are downweighted.

“If you were expecting a wild action-packed experience from Rusty Rabbit, you’ve come to the wrong place. The developers at Nitroplus have crafted a solid, straightforward Metroidvania with lighthearted gameplay, blended with elements of a visual novel. Its charm, however, doesn’t lie in how it plays. What makes it captivating is, above all, its atmosphere and the fictional world it presents. That’s precisely what sets it apart from the competition, which may well have more complex and polished gameplay mechanics.”

“Developer SoFun has crafted an endearing and occasionally hilarious world full of mystery, which even after credits roll feels poised for bigger things. However, at launch, the game feels noticeably slow and the visuals seem compromised on Switch, which brings borderline sluggishness occasionally into frustrating territory. By no means a dealbreaker, and not necessarily a barrier to the dozens of hours of fun gameplay you can find, but we hope to hear of some updates that make exploring Smokestack Mountain as enjoyable as it should be.”

“Weird, wonderful, and occasionally wearying, Rusty Rabbit is a game with a big heart, a rusty shell, and a few too many junk blocks in the way of greatness.”

“Among metroidvania titles available, Rusty Rabbit holds its own, though it falls short of its contemporaries due to the disruptive flow of cutscenes and narration. Its controls could be more fluent and responsive, but the dense atmosphere and writing carry the weight of the experience, making it memorable and interesting enough to stand out from the crowd in a saturated genre.”

“The game delivers an experience with lighter themes and less intense events than other works by the studio, but maintains the quality and depth characteristic of the developer's writing.”

“Rusty Rabbit is a bittersweet experience. While there are glimpses of potential in some of the mechanics, the obvious shortcomings in the movement and combat systems undermine the overall enjoyment, relegating it to a title to be tackled lightly. Be aware that the game is far from perfect!”

“Rusty Rabbit is a standard Metroidvania that doesn't stray far from the formula, but surprises with lots of customisation and light social sim elements. It's worth playing for its protagonist alone (in the Japanese dub at least), a cute rabbit with the stern vocals of Kazama Kiryu.”

“With a big world to explore and a compelling story full of twists and turns, Rusty Rabbit offers a pretty meaty campaign that stays interesting all the way through. The gameplay loop and upgrades are very satisfying and keep things fresh along the way. Whether you're familiar with the artist's work or you're brand new to it like me, I fully recommend Rusty Rabbit.”

“Rusty Rabbit is an interesting title, with a strong plot in a colourful world. However, the gameplay and dialogue can drag at times.”

“Rusty Rabbit constantly kept me entertained with its easy and fun gameplay, extensive lore and super cute visuals. I had an absolute blast drilling through bricks, chatting with the BBs and exploring all the different connected dungeons. Though some elements, such as the skill tree and reasons for requests, were hard to understand, I was always super pumped when I booted up Rusty Rabbit and got to spend time as a middle-aged, grumpy, yet strong and courageous junk yard bunny.”

“Rusty Rabbit is a 2D platformer with a very strange concept, bad implementation of ideas, and a very good main character, whose charisma and bad-ass appearance are simply not enough to carry the entire game on his back.”
