How this score was computed
The VGC Score is a weighted blend on a press-comparable 0-100 quality scale. Steam approval rates are first calibrated (95% positive on Steam ≈ 89.5 quality, since Steam approval skews high). Press and tracked creator reviews each count ~2x a player review and share one cap against player evidence (creator buy/skip calls pool into an approval rate, calibrated like Steam approval); all-time sentiment is capped and halved (it's context, not verdict); reviews of the current build carry the most weight when a fresh patch anchors the window; and a 'typical game' prior keeps small samples from pegging the scale. Because press reviews and Metacritic user aggregates describe the launch build, their weight decays as the game ages (3-year half-life after a 1-year grace). That's how a game that launched rough can outgrow its old reception once updates win players over. Reviews under 2h playtime (the refund window), non-Steam activations, and free copies are downweighted.

“I Hate This Place isn’t a bad indie game, but it’s a frustratingly uneven one, with strong atmosphere undercut by clunky mechanics and technical hiccups.”

“I Hate This Place would have been perceived much more favorably if the developers had abandoned the survival elements and instead focused on exploring its deep lore and dynamic world.”

“I Hate This Place is a bite-sized survival horror game that pairs striking comic-book-style visuals with solid combat mechanics. Its flexible approach to encounters, allowing players to choose between stealth and all-out gunfights, creates a satisfying blend of chaos and strategy. While the game world is relatively small, it makes effective use of its space and delivers a consistently fun experience. Crafting is straightforward without feeling shallow, and the simple base-building systems make it accessible to players of all skill levels. If you’re a fan of survival horror, you’ll find plenty to enjoy while looting, crafting, and fighting to survive in I Hate This Place.”

“I Hate This Place is a fun horror-lite game that's rarely startling, but always enjoyable.”

“I Hate This Place is a game that oversells itself in the trailer and undershoots on the Switch, but still manages to be very enjoyable. The performance issues, visual compromises, and pared‑back crafting leave their mark on much of the experience, yet the core loop of sneaking, crafting, and blasting through strange supernatural threats has enough bite to carry it.When the action flows, it's easy to see what the developers were aiming for. It just depends on whether you're willing to look past the rough edges to enjoy what does work.”

“On PS5, I Hate This Place is an intriguing but uneven survival horror experiment that opens strong, looks fantastic, and has a handful of clever ideas but never quite brings them together. Its comic book visuals and sound design give it an immediately recognisable identity, and there are moments when stalking through the woods or picking through an underground bunker hints at something special. Unfortunately, generous resources, disjointed systems, undercooked storytelling, and rough presentation steadily erode the tension it works so hard to build.”

“I Hate This Place is still one of the most interesting independent horror movies I’ve seen in a while. It could be up there with the best games in its genre if it got some balance fixes and a bigger focus on challenge. As it stands, it’s a stylish, creepy, and often memorable trip that you should take, even if you don’t hate the place by the end.”

“I Hate This Place gave me exactly what I want from survival horror: tension, ambience, and gameplay that keeps you hooked. The comic-book 80s look is a blast, and the soundtrack and environmental effects really elevate the mood. All in all, the experience comes together nicely and gives you a solid 8-hour horror trip.”

“I Hate This Place is an aesthetically perfected, stylish 80’s romp that unfortunately struggles with somewhat of an identity crisis. Despite drawing inspiration from some of the best work the 1980s has to offer, the game slaps together a bunch of conflicting gameplay mechanics, which would have been stronger if they just focused on a solitary idea. Worth a grab for the price it’s going for, doubly so if you’re a fan of 80’s horror.”

“I Hate This Place is otherwise quite an interesting project, but its release was clearly rushed, leaving it in a technically poor state filled with numerous bugs.”
