How this score was computed
The VGC Score is a weighted blend on a press-comparable 0-100 quality scale. Steam approval rates are first calibrated (95% positive on Steam ≈ 89.5 quality, since Steam approval skews high). Press and tracked creator reviews each count ~2x a player review and share one cap against player evidence (creator buy/skip calls pool into an approval rate, calibrated like Steam approval); all-time sentiment is capped and halved (it's context, not verdict); reviews of the current build carry the most weight when a fresh patch anchors the window; and a 'typical game' prior keeps small samples from pegging the scale. Because press reviews and Metacritic user aggregates describe the launch build, their weight decays as the game ages (3-year half-life after a 1-year grace). That's how a game that launched rough can outgrow its old reception once updates win players over. Reviews under 2h playtime (the refund window), non-Steam activations, and free copies are downweighted.

“Metro Awakening represents not only a return to the Moscow metro after a relatively long time, but also the first opportunity to experience this post-apocalyptic world literally from the perspective of your own eyes in virtual reality. Vertigo Games managed to do it incredibly succesfully. It is, simply put, a full-fledged Metro that no fan should miss. This is despite its flaws, for example with the abrupt change of narrative style midway through or the repetition of locations.”

“Metro Awakening delivers an immersive dive into the maze-like metro tunnels, showcasing commendable effort from Vertigo Games. While its impactful opening sets high expectations, the spinoff struggles with an overly long runtime given its limited content variety and technical shortcomings.”

“We're sorry that we ever doubted that Vertigo could pull off a Metro VR game. The Dutch devs have masterfully captured the essence of this cult series, and amplified its best traits with myriad VR specific mechanics. While we had some issues with its story and would have liked a tad more setting variety, its highs are so high we'd happily go through it all again. With the visuals, the atmosphere, and the controls all melting into the experience, Metro Awakening is easily one of the most immersive VR games we've ever played.”

“Metro Awakening brings the Metro universe to virtual reality. The game impresses with an excellently realized end-time atmosphere in the Moscow subway, which is in no way inferior to the main series. The story, the characters and, above all, the typical VR mechanics such as climbing, opening doors and turning valves also impressed us throughout, as did the truly outstanding implementation of the shooting system. If you ignore the somewhat poorly detailed creatures, the sometimes somewhat awkward motion controls (e.g. when loading the lamp) or the repeatedly wildly placed subtitles, you definitely get a high-quality VR experience in twelve chapters, which is a worthy representative of the main series.”

“One of the more interesting offerings for VR goggles this year and a confection for fans of the Metro universe.”

“Metro Awakening VR delivers some terrifying moments in its deep, thought-provoking story, but after a strong start, repetitive levels and pacing issues kill most of its momentum.”

“After a long time, Metro Awakening is finally another reason to take the VR headset out of the shelf, dust it off and play something. It's a game you'll enjoy thanks to its very good atmosphere and decent story, but it has a rather rambling narrative that's hard to follow at times.”

“Vertigo Games may be new to the Metro lifestyle, but they pull it off with a confidence that really shows through. The VR touches to bring the series to VR are masterfully handled with only the occasional VR jank issue rearing its ugly head. The story may not always impress, but the tense firefights and threats around every corner really perform a lot of the heavy lifting. Metro: Awakening is a standout title for the PSVR2 and while that isn’t saying a lot given its barren catalog, it’s still a solid outing nonetheless and a great Metro game to boot.”

“Superbly immersive and packed full of action and chills, Metro Awakening is by far the best PSVR 2 game this year and should be in the top ten of all PS5 games of 2024.”

“The Combat is serviceable for a VR game involving firearms and maybe a little more enemy variety feels needed. However, a light at the end of the Metro tunnel is seen through its fantastic storytelling and world-building.”

“Metro Awakening is worth every penny. It's the most immersive post-apocalyptic experience I've had the pleasure of playing, and every step I took through the tunnels beneath Moscow had me feeling on edge and wary of my next move.”

“After a long wait for a VR game to rival Half-Life: Alyx, Metro Awakening by VR powerhouse Vertigo Games initially seemed like a worthy contender, but after eight hours in Moscow’s post-apocalyptic metro tunnels, it’s clear that on the Quest 3, inconsistent graphics, problematic controls, lack of variety, and technical issues hold it back from reaching Alyx's heights, leaving only nostalgia to carry hardcore Metro fans through an experience that struggles to stay compelling over time.”
