How this score was computed

The VGC Score is a weighted blend on a press-comparable 0-100 quality scale. Steam approval rates are first calibrated (95% positive on Steam ≈ 89.5 quality, since Steam approval skews high). Press and tracked creator reviews each count ~2x a player review and share one cap against player evidence (creator buy/skip calls pool into an approval rate, calibrated like Steam approval); all-time sentiment is capped and halved (it's context, not verdict); reviews of the current build carry the most weight when a fresh patch anchors the window; and a 'typical game' prior keeps small samples from pegging the scale. Because press reviews and Metacritic user aggregates describe the launch build, their weight decays as the game ages (3-year half-life after a 1-year grace). That's how a game that launched rough can outgrow its old reception once updates win players over. Reviews under 2h playtime (the refund window), non-Steam activations, and free copies are downweighted.

The first installment of the Halo series is considered the jewel made by Xbox and the primary reason for Xbox's success. What this legendary entry truly deserved was a remake worthy of the game's historical status, and to fulfill this entitlement, Halo Campaign Evolved was released. It preserved the spirit of the original game while bringing improvements to the narrative style, environment design, vehicle handling, along with high quality in gameplay and graphics, the addition of usable weapons, and extra missions to pave the way for the game's story. However, the game was flawed by some issues such as repetitive level design in indoor areas, technical issues, and problems in cinematic cutscenes.

The final verdict is disappointing. Halo Studios is not only incapable of making a quality brand-new game, but they can't even handle a remake of a timeless classic. Yes, Combat Evolved may seem somewhat dated in places today, but it still generates unforgettable battles. Halo: Campaign Evolved brought positive changes to the original campaign, but much of it also turned out to be either superfluous or downright ridiculous. What's especially frustrating is the deterioration of combat dynamics combined with the dumbing down of the AI. And the absence of multiplayer simply can't be ignored.

Campaign Evolved does not bring evolution to the Halo table. Still, this is the best way to play the original Combat Evolved campaign today.

Halo: Campaign Evolved proves the original's timeless combat still holds up on Unreal Engine 5, but with the Master Chief Collection readily available, this campaign-only remake feels more like a technical test run than an essential trip back to Halo.

Halo: Campaign Evolved looks and sounds like a true current-gen title, but baffingly retains the tedious level design that even longtime fans of the original found tiresome. A bolder approach would have softened this disappointment.

The greatest strengths of Halo: Campaign Evolved come from the quality of the original itself, as Combat Evolved remains, even after 25 years, a superb shooter. Long-time fans of the series will enjoy the remake if nostalgia is enough to win them over, but they may quickly spot some flaws, from graphics that are beautiful but hard to read to a poor remaster of the iconic soundtrack. New players would be better off trying the original or the Anniversary Edition.

While it won’t have the same impact it did 25 years ago, and it comes with some caveats, Halo Campaign Evolved is another fun journey through the maw. With vastly improved visuals, new experiences and story context, and new ways to play, it’s a great time to revisit a classic or to enjoy it for the first time.

Halo: Campaign Evolved is a solid but safe remake of the timeless classic shooter. Fans of the original should probably not expect too much out of this revisit, but longtime PlayStation fans can now experience one of the most influential FPS campaigns of all time on Sony's platform.

As someone finally getting the chance to experience one of gaming’s most iconic franchises, I’m glad I played it. The story may not have completely lived up to the legendary status it had built in my mind, but the satisfying combat, excellent weapon variety, enjoyable vehicle sections and impressive visual overhaul still make for a fun campaign.

Halo: Campaign Evolved is a visually ambitious, technically interesting remake, but it can’t replicate the most important part of the work it aims to celebrate: that extraordinary combination of shooting, sandbox, AI, and freedom that turned Combat Evolved into a masterpiece. It’s a project that proves, once again, that rebuilding a classic is far easier than truly understanding its legacy.

Halo: Campaign Evolved is a restoration carried out with a steady hand and a clear love for the subject matter. The gunplay remains a masterclass in precision and immediacy, the sandbox retains its impeccable clarity, and the technical reconstruction on Unreal Engine 5 does justice to a universe that defined a generation, all backed by rock-solid performance on PC. Unfortunately, the commitment to fidelity sometimes goes too far; the three new missions are over in less than two hours, and the price remains steep for a remake that relies more on nostalgia than on ambition. An excellent re-release, lacking only the courage to take a few more risks.

Halo Campaign Evolved is one of the best ways to experience Master Chief's first adventure and serves as a promising demonstration of what the studio can achieve with Unreal Engine. It's not just Halo 1 with better graphics; it's a playful and technical reinterpretation that understands that preserving a classic doesn't mean leaving it untouched.
