How this score was computed
The VGC Score is a weighted blend on a press-comparable 0-100 quality scale. Steam approval rates are first calibrated (95% positive on Steam ≈ 89.5 quality, since Steam approval skews high). Press and tracked creator reviews each count ~2x a player review and share one cap against player evidence (creator buy/skip calls pool into an approval rate, calibrated like Steam approval); all-time sentiment is capped and halved (it's context, not verdict); reviews of the current build carry the most weight when a fresh patch anchors the window; and a 'typical game' prior keeps small samples from pegging the scale. Because press reviews and Metacritic user aggregates describe the launch build, their weight decays as the game ages (3-year half-life after a 1-year grace). That's how a game that launched rough can outgrow its old reception once updates win players over. Reviews under 2h playtime (the refund window), non-Steam activations, and free copies are downweighted.

“Pared-back gameplay options, outdated visuals, and lengthy loads are par for the course for 2K on Switch, but the fact that NBA 2K25 feels like a lessened experience on even last year's disappointing entry is a real turnover for the series. Sound the buzzer and call for a substitution, it’s time we brought ‘Switch 2’ on.”

“An updated version of last year’s edition does not offer enough content to justify its full price. But as ever, if you want to play the newest edition, you have but one choice. Sure, it’s better, more realistic and updated with new events and data, but the fans of basketball deserve more than an annual recycle and sadly, this is just that and a bit more.”

“NBA 2K25 offers stacks of content, a robust tutorial system and some of the best gameplay in the series yet, though it's almost derailed by an over-reliance on microtransactions.”

“If you are a basketball fan and looking for a quality simulator, NBA 2K25 is the right choice.”

“By daring to downscale some of the fluff, NBA 2K25 brings its focus back to basketball in a positive way. Improvements to the series' dribbling system and ProPLAY make this the best feeling hoops sim Visual Concepts has made, while the sheer density of different modes and features means you could play nothing else all year, and still never get bored. But the borderline insulting emphasis on microtransactions remain a thorn in this series' side, and something you simply have to accept if you want to enjoy everything else on offer here.”

“NBA 2K25 shows that Visual Concepts has not been stunned in its comfort zone and the goal is still to grow, test new technologies and offer the most content in a sports game. In terms of gameplay, new systems and customization of the experience, this year's installment is on another level and can easily look over the shoulder of other IPs. The gaming experience is rewarding and playing one game, and another, and another becomes addictive as this is one of the best controls ever created.”

“NBA 2K25 comes up with full content again like every year. Next Gen technology on the PC side is nice, but it has a lot of problems. It needs to improve especially in terms of optimisation. We cannot ignore some errors in MyCAREER modes. However, the colourful atmosphere of the game manages to attract you.”

“Longtime players of the NBA 2K series already know what to expect from 2K25. The game has played well for a long time, and this years game is no exception. While there were more glitches and issues than I would have liked, you’re still getting a solid on-court experience from this years edition. With that said, I simply can’t score the game higher than a 7 based on the continued overemphasis on microtransactions to the detriment of what should be the most enjoyable mode in the game. I can’t recommend buying the game at full price, knowing that you’ll need to pay the VC tax if you want to have a shot at being competitive online. I hope for next years game 2K will consider decoupling MyCareer and MyPlayer online and do something more akin to MLB the Show, while making microtransactions much more optional and less intrusive. That feels like wishful thinking however, as the game continues to sell hand over fist. If you plan on taking the dive again this year, just make sure you know what you’re getting into.”

“With revamped animations, smooth gameplay and in-depth modes, it looks like a simulation that satisfies basketball fans, but there is still a long way to go.”

“NBA 2K25 is a step in the right direction. The changes are definitely for the better, and I have no hesitation in writing that this is the best and most polished in terms of gameplay in recent years.”

“NBA 2K25 still carries a lot of the standards for how sports games should reflect and celebrate their sport of choice. I just wish it didn't have this odd economic quandary hanging over it. If it were to somehow address that problem and leave it on the cutting room floor, we'd really be onto something.”
