How this score was computed

The VGC Score is a weighted blend on a press-comparable 0-100 quality scale. Steam approval rates are first calibrated (95% positive on Steam ≈ 89.5 quality, since Steam approval skews high). Press and tracked creator reviews each count ~2x a player review and share one cap against player evidence (creator buy/skip calls pool into an approval rate, calibrated like Steam approval); all-time sentiment is capped and halved (it's context, not verdict); reviews of the current build carry the most weight when a fresh patch anchors the window; and a 'typical game' prior keeps small samples from pegging the scale. Because press reviews and Metacritic user aggregates describe the launch build, their weight decays as the game ages (3-year half-life after a 1-year grace). That's how a game that launched rough can outgrow its old reception once updates win players over. Reviews under 2h playtime (the refund window), non-Steam activations, and free copies are downweighted.

Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake is a fantastic conclusion to the Erdrick trilogy, given a fresh new look. It’s a loving and beautifully crafted tribute to the roots of the JRPG genre, successfully modernizing outdated mechanics without losing any of its original charm. Although there are some questionable design choices (especially in the first game) and certain retro elements still feel a bit jarring, the result is enchanting. Thanks to the added content, Dragon Quest II is the clear standout of the bundle and feels like a full-fledged modern retro RPG. For fans of the series and lovers of the genre, it’s a must-play and a wonderful trip back in time. And for modern players, at least you’ll get a sense of what we had to endure just to play. After all, no one has ever given us back those hundreds of hours of grinding.

While it offers a whole host of improvements, the Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake experiences end up being quite different. Dragon Quest I’s remake offers an amazing story upgrade but has frustrating battles throughout, while Dragon Quest II’s remake is one of the most amazing and memorable Dragon Quest experiences there is.

Dragon Quest I & II Remake offers a classic experience with a modern touch, honoring the series’ legacy and welcoming new players. While some ‘80s design elements remain, like excessive random encounters, weak side quests, and high difficulty in parts of the first game, the HD-2D approach enhances visuals and audio, making it a great way to experience the start of this iconic JRPG series.
