How this score was computed
The VGC Score is a weighted blend on a press-comparable 0-100 quality scale. Steam approval rates are first calibrated (95% positive on Steam ≈ 89.5 quality, since Steam approval skews high). Press and tracked creator reviews each count ~2x a player review and share one cap against player evidence (creator buy/skip calls pool into an approval rate, calibrated like Steam approval); all-time sentiment is capped and halved (it's context, not verdict); reviews of the current build carry the most weight when a fresh patch anchors the window; and a 'typical game' prior keeps small samples from pegging the scale. Because press reviews and Metacritic user aggregates describe the launch build, their weight decays as the game ages (3-year half-life after a 1-year grace). That's how a game that launched rough can outgrow its old reception once updates win players over. Reviews under 2h playtime (the refund window), non-Steam activations, and free copies are downweighted.

“While may stumble at times with balancing the amount of mini-games it throws your way, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth excels in all other areas and feels magnificent when all its pieces click into place.”

“My opinion doesn’t matter. For better or worse, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is going to be whatever it wants to be, and what it wants to be is anything it damn well pleases. Against all common sense, that audacity absolutely works, and I can’t wait to see how the next game gloriously screws things up.”

“Somehow, despite shouldering almost impossible expectations, Rebirth is a wonder: a marvel of a game that merges the old and nostalgic with the ever-increasing burdens of modern gaming sensibilities and technical prowess. The combat is incredible, fine-tuned to a sharp edge, and a noticeable improvement over its predecessor. Rebirth also justifies its shift toward open-world gameplay with a breadth and depth of content that ranges from simple tasks to deeply involved side quests. Despite a turbulent ending that almost feels more tailor-made to invite speculation than to provide a coherent narrative, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is a high watermark of the genre. Its true legacy, however, will ultimately be determined by the final part of this exciting trilogy.”

“It will be nearly impossible to evaluate Final Fantasy VII Rebirth outside of the trilogy as a whole in the years to come. But right now nothing is stopping us from doing so. To put it succinctly, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is one of the finest games in Square Enix's entire history.”

“Final Fantasy VII: Rebirth combines the best that RPGs have to offer. The interweaving of linear missions and the open world works perfectly. The side quests are varied, as are the various mini-games. But the story and the unique combat system deserve the most tremendous praise, which has been dramatically improved compared to the first part.”

“Final Fantasy VII Rebirth tried to take over the baton from the chic Remake, but instead of a concentrated story adventure, it offered all the worst trends of open-world games, did not really deepen the events familiar from FF VII, and at the same time broke one of the most important plot points of the original "finale".”

“Final Fantasy VII Rebirth represents a new milestone for the franchise, combining classic elements with modern innovations to create an experience that feels both familiar and fresh. With its deep storytelling, expansive world, and refined gameplay mechanics, the title solidifies its place as one of the best RPGs of its generation. Whether you’re a longtime fan or a new player, Rebirth offers an unforgettable journey that’s worth embarking on (though you may want to wait for the PC version).”

“Throughout, Cloud and his motley troupe of friends are given the space and opportunity to be more than just heroes, even more than just friends, or potentially lovers, but human beings who are rightfully unsure of what power they have to stop the inevitable. These are still the familiar heroes on the same journey they were on in 1997, unsure of their roles as eco-terrorists turned fugitives on a nebulous quest against a force of unfathomable, alien evil, but more than just the size and scale of Rebirth as an RPG, there’s so much more catharsis in the telling.”

“Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is a tremendous addition to the growing Switch 2 catalogue, delivering an ambitious and content-rich RPG experience that sets a new bar for what players can expect from the best entries in the JRPG genre. The heartfelt story, innovative action combat, and huge amount of open-world content combine in an experience that's hard to put down for the several dozen hours it lasts.Though there are some noticeable performance and visual concessions, these ultimately don't detract enough from the game's quality to derail the experience. I'd absolutely recommend you pick this up if you consider yourself a fan of JRPGs - Square Enix knocked this one out of the park, and it more than deserves a spot in your library.”

“When it comes to games, you’ll rarely find yourself saying: ‘’Let your expectations run wild, for they will surely be met with excellence’’. Rebirth feels more like a spectacular conclusion than a midway point of a trilogy. Bursting with content, rare are the moments where you won’t feel the utmost joy. It is easily one of the best Final Fantasy games ever conceived and one of the greatest titles this genre has to offer. A true masterpiece that makes us excited for what the series will have to offer next.”

“Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is grand in the way you don't see that often in video games. It can surprise the way only the creators of indie games can. It has perfect gameplay, superb story, amazing scale and lots of emotion. It really is a great, grand game.”
