How this score was computed
The VGC Score is a weighted blend on a press-comparable 0-100 quality scale. Steam approval rates are first calibrated (95% positive on Steam ≈ 89.5 quality, since Steam approval skews high). Press and tracked creator reviews each count ~2x a player review and share one cap against player evidence (creator buy/skip calls pool into an approval rate, calibrated like Steam approval); all-time sentiment is capped and halved (it's context, not verdict); reviews of the current build carry the most weight when a fresh patch anchors the window; and a 'typical game' prior keeps small samples from pegging the scale. Because press reviews and Metacritic user aggregates describe the launch build, their weight decays as the game ages (3-year half-life after a 1-year grace). That's how a game that launched rough can outgrow its old reception once updates win players over. Reviews under 2h playtime (the refund window), non-Steam activations, and free copies are downweighted.

| Metacritic user ratings | – | – | 0 |
| Post-patch Steam reviews (trust-weighted) | 71% | 67 | 267 |

“Crime Boss: Rockay City didn't live up to its potential. There are a lot of flaws in the game, and a lot of elements feel unpolished. Still, it will find its fans.”

“Crime Boss: Rockay City offers a high-quality experience with cooperative elements that will delight fans of Payday-style heist games. The game lets you play as a gangster in a richly detailed world full of action and strategic territory conquest, which is particularly appealing to multiplayer fans. Although the single-player content is somewhat limited, the variety of game modes and missions provides plenty of entertainment. Higher-quality character models and better use of the star-studded cast would enhance the overall experience, but it’s still a solid title that will delight fans of crime-themed action games.”

“Crime Boss: Rockay City is a game with big ambitions, but it fails to deliver on most fronts”

“All in all, Crime Boss: Rockay City is a game that falls short of its potential due to various issues. While the idea of building a criminal empire through heists and territory wars with a variety of characters is compelling, the poor gunplay and writing detract from the overall experience. Even the star-studded voice cast can't save it from being a disappointment.”

“Crime Boss makes a very compelling argument in its favor. Is the game perfect now? No, not by any stretch of the imagination. The single player may as well not even exist and is good for maybe a brief look out of morbid curiosity. The online multiplayer, on the other hand, is very fun.”

“Crime Boss: Rockay City is a has-been roguelike mashed together with a has-been FPS that's mostly filled with has-been movie stars.”

“Crime Boss is a game that has not used its potential. Even the presence of Hollywood stars cannot break this trend. The game suffers from a repetitive mission structure and problematic gameplay. It also appears not to have improved since its debut a year ago.”

“Crime Boss: Rockay City has some potential but lack of polish across the board combined with repetitive gameplay does more harm than its poorly included celebrity cast could ever help.”

“Crime Boss Rockay City deserved better, from the inexcusable number of bugs and glitches that players will come across while played the games narrative or the multiplayer missions to the just laughable performances of some actors who I used to hold in such high regard. In a different timeline this game would have just leaned 100% into the jank and made this a successful parody. But instead, it falls flat by trying to tell a serious story about an ambitious crime boss who wanted more, a story as old as time and one that’s been told a million times better before.”

“Crime Boss: Rockay City has done something that few other games have accomplished since the advent of patching. The team has taken what was a very bad game at launch and made it good enough to be enjoyable. The missions may be short, but the lack of lag and the presence of better-than-expected AI companions makes each encounter fun. The presence of the player XP system makes the tweaked campaign and online modes worth grinding through. Coming in at a cheaper base price than its Epic Games Store launch price, Rockay City is a decent purchase for those who were disappointed with Payday 3 and exhausted with Payday 2.”

“Despite some of the glaring weaknesses, Crime Boss: Rockay City has praiseworthy content, thoroughly had a good time playing, and it was better than anticipated. Lastly, Crime Boss: Rockay City will have more to come with DLCs throughout the year. And with Payday 3 arriving in September, one would hope that the updates bring a lot more to the table with different sets of missions, weapons, characters, improvements and more to keep their audience.”

“There is fun to be found in "Crime Boss," but its issues bog down the experience enough to keep it from keeping you invested for very long.”
