How this score was computed

The VGC Score is a weighted blend on a press-comparable 0-100 quality scale. Steam approval rates are first calibrated (95% positive on Steam ≈ 89.5 quality, since Steam approval skews high). Press and tracked creator reviews each count ~2x a player review and share one cap against player evidence (creator buy/skip calls pool into an approval rate, calibrated like Steam approval); all-time sentiment is capped and halved (it's context, not verdict); reviews of the current build carry the most weight when a fresh patch anchors the window; and a 'typical game' prior keeps small samples from pegging the scale. Because press reviews and Metacritic user aggregates describe the launch build, their weight decays as the game ages (3-year half-life after a 1-year grace). That's how a game that launched rough can outgrow its old reception once updates win players over. Reviews under 2h playtime (the refund window), non-Steam activations, and free copies are downweighted.

This isn't the least pricey shmup option out there. But for the asking price, R Type Delta: HD Boosted delivers value for money. The game looks good, sounds good, and has replayability. If you like a shmup, go get this one.

A true arcade game that never was, and confined to the PlayStation until now, shoot-'em-up fans will adore what's in store. A seminal work that has never looked better, Delta, with its boundless creativity and exacting design, stands out not just amongst its peers, but as perhaps the best R-Type the series ever produced.Yes, it's still crazy tough, and no quick restarts or scene-skipping is painful, but this new HD revamp is by far the best way to play it. If you're itching for a shoot-'em-up experience of note, this will make your year.

The move to a 3D presentation came out well for R-Type Delta, and it looks great all these years later in this revamped format. An excellent soundtrack makes every stage more exciting, and the variety of spacecraft to choose from keeps playthroughs fresh. Like most shoot ‘em ups, this is a tough game, but it is one that sits right up there in the genre. That said, more features, unlockables and screen filters could have really elevated R-Type Delta: HD Boosted.

R-Type Delta: HD Boosted revitalizes the 1998 PlayStation classic, staying true to the franchise's reputation for grueling difficulty where even the "Kids" setting offers a formidable challenge. As a faithful modernization of the series' first foray into 3D graphics, the game demands precision and memorization from players, punishing mistakes with one-hit deaths and a strict game-over structure that rejects modern hand-holding. Despite its modest audiovisual updates, the gameplay remains deep thanks to three distinct ships and tactical mechanics like the Force unit and the screen-clearing Delta Weapon. Ultimately, it serves as a nostalgic, unforgiving, yet highly rewarding "shmup" experience designed for genre veterans and those willing to endure its trial-and-error nature.

R-Type Delta HD Boosted offers tight gameplay and nostalgic strategy, but muddy visuals and collision bugs hold it back from greatness.

When most of the game is super authentic to the PS1 original, it just makes no sense to me for a lot of other aspects to be so grossly wrong. Add in the lack of anything like online leaderboards, and this while this was still a lot of fun for me to revisit, it ain’t the treatment R-Type Delta deserved.

R-Type Delta: HD Boosted is a great remake of the original PlayStation game. It looks and sounds excellent, and even with the quality-of-life improvements, it's still incredibly intense!

In the end, R-Type Delta: HD Boosted is a faithful revival of a standout game, maybe a little too faithful at times, but I’m still very glad it’s finally here. Despite the absence of modern extras, it’s a brilliant slice of ‘90s sci-fi intensity brought back to life, and after all these years, it still knows how to deliver a thrilling fight.

R-Type Delta HD Boosted feels like a obligatory act of preservation out of capitalism than a celebration of a cult classic of the Playstation 1 era. It does what it needs to do and not a lick more. The upscaling settings and button mappings are about the only configuration that has been tinkered with in the probably open source emulation framework they've chosen. There is no additional features te speak off or leaderboards to take on other players. The game it self is left to its own devices, which it still, after 30 odd years, does remarkably well. Both in terms of gameplay and looks. Those who are in for a thoughtful, deep horizontal shooter should not pass up on it but at the same time will be disappointed that it isn't presented with much more style and fanfare.

R-Type Delta: HD Boosted stays true to what made the original stand out. The ships, the Force tricks, and the tough stage layouts still hit hard, and the HD upgrade helps the world read better than before. A few rough edges remain, like spots where the screen gets hard to read and no quick restarts, but the core challenge is worth learning. If you enjoy pushing through tough shooters, this remaster delivers exactly that.
