How this score was computed
The VGC Score is a weighted blend on a press-comparable 0-100 quality scale. Steam approval rates are first calibrated (95% positive on Steam ≈ 89.5 quality, since Steam approval skews high). Press and tracked creator reviews each count ~2x a player review and share one cap against player evidence (creator buy/skip calls pool into an approval rate, calibrated like Steam approval); all-time sentiment is capped and halved (it's context, not verdict); reviews of the current build carry the most weight when a fresh patch anchors the window; and a 'typical game' prior keeps small samples from pegging the scale. Because press reviews and Metacritic user aggregates describe the launch build, their weight decays as the game ages (3-year half-life after a 1-year grace). That's how a game that launched rough can outgrow its old reception once updates win players over. Reviews under 2h playtime (the refund window), non-Steam activations, and free copies are downweighted.

“Chariot is not for the faint of heart, it's a game that requires patience and a slightly stubborn nature to stick with, whether in co-op or single player. Although initially often frustrating, you do grow to embrace the challenging nature of Chariot. Solo gamers may want to approach with caution as, although it's still a decent experience, this isn't a game carved out with single player as its main focus. Instead you'll be left with a somewhat hampered campaign that's equally as frustrating but far less rewarding than that of co-op mode. However, those who are able to enlist a gaming partner of similar ability will get the most out of Chariot, and the unique experience it offers makes it far easier to recommend.”

“Chariot is a true co-op game. The beauty is that the game can be played and enjoyed in two completely different styles. Puzzles that were fairly easy with a partner become daunting obstacles when flying solo. Each way to play has its merits, and the game length can effectively be doubled by going down both paths. Beautiful presentation and a near complete lack of glitches round out the package that makes Chariot one of the best games to come out for the Wii U.”

“Chariot is one of the best cooperative gaming experiences we’ve ever had. It’s immensely rewarding, abundantly creative, and the sense of accomplishment that it instills within the player will lead to high-fives being thrown around the room on a regular basis.”

“Chariot is quite the surprise. Its endearing style, smart design, and intuitive gameplay really hooked us, and we ended up having great fun in both single player and co-op. With a Platinum Trophy, and tons of content to tuck into, this is one carriage well worth riding.”

“As one of the first eShop releases of 2015, Chariot is a fine adventure to kick off the year. It's a unique take on the physics-based platformer that feels fresh and inspired. While the overt focus on co-op might make it less appealing to the solo gamer, it's still a worthy adventure to embark on even if you're all alone. After all, you still have the ghost of the king, even if he won't return your high fives.”

“With two players pushing and pulling the coffin of their own accord it's redolent of a classic Chuckle Brothers sketch. It's chaotic fun in a mould that's largely disappeared since the advent of online gaming but has seen a revival of late with the likes of Towerfall: Ascension. Nevertheless, Chariot is still an engaging single player experience that's well worth the admission fee. Just remember to hold X to pay your respects.”

“The game does a great job of constantly ensuring communication and co-operation between players, not just by entrusting both of them with a shared responsibility in protecting the Chariot, but also in the great level design. There are always a huge number of diverging paths in every stage and each route promises a number of collectibles to discover.”

“Chariot is one of the better platformers I've played of late. Played on your own, it is a good and challenging affair, but working in a pair pushes it up a few notches. The game itself is pretty large and it is likely you won't see everything on your first go, since exploration is key in Chariot and you are encouraged to roll off the beaten path to discover additional secrets. A few issues could be addressed but overall Chariot is worth your time if you like a good puzzle platformer.”

“No fun at all on your own, but together on the same couch this is one of the most entertaining co-op puzzles for many months.”
