SUPERHOT

SUPERHOT Team · released Feb 25, 2016

ActionIndiePCPlayStation 4Xbox OneNintendo Switch

SUPERHOT is the smash-hit FPS where time moves only when you move. No regenerating health bars. No conveniently placed ammo drops. It's you, alone, outnumbered and outgunned. Snatch weapons from fallen enemies to shoot, slice and dodge through a truly cinematic hurricane of slow-motion bullets.

How this score was computed

The VGC Score is a weighted blend on a press-comparable 0-100 quality scale. Steam approval rates are first calibrated (95% positive on Steam ≈ 89.5 quality, since Steam approval skews high). Press and tracked creator reviews each count ~2x a player review and share one cap against player evidence (creator buy/skip calls pool into an approval rate, calibrated like Steam approval); all-time sentiment is capped and halved (it's context, not verdict); reviews of the current build carry the most weight when a fresh patch anchors the window; and a 'typical game' prior keeps small samples from pegging the scale. Because press reviews and Metacritic user aggregates describe the launch build, their weight decays as the game ages (3-year half-life after a 1-year grace). That's how a game that launched rough can outgrow its old reception once updates win players over. Reviews under 2h playtime (the refund window), non-Steam activations, and free copies are downweighted.

You'll see talk online about how Superhot is "the most innovative first-person shooter I've played in years." It's a phrase people who've played the game keep using, and there's a memetic reason for that -one I won't spoil. I will, however, have to say that I'm on board with the sentiment of the phrase despite any potential ironic usage. Because it is simply true. Superhot is the most innovative shooter I've played in years.

Its methodical, stop-motion approach to gameplay forces players to be as economical as possible.

So yes, Superhot might be a one trick pony but it plays that one trick well. And while some might take offence to its subversiveness, what with the fact that it's not a first-person shooter but rather a first-person puzzler, the bigger issue lies with the lack of content. Unless you're a completionist, there's very little reason to come back to it when you're done. Considering how cheap other games are on Steam, you could do much better with your money or wait for a sale before picking this up.

Superhot offers a first-person shooter experience unlike any other, and although the main campaign is a little bit on the short side, once you've made it through you'll have dozens of new ways to replay it should you wish. We're not entirely sure why this particular phrase comes to mind, but Superhot is the most innovative shooter we've played in years.

Even with its very short campaign, the game offers tremendous replay value with various challenges and modifiers. The "time moves when you move" mechanic is polished to perfection resulting in some of the most spectacular scenes in FPS games.

Superhot made quite a leap from the prototype stage to full version and changed for the better in the process. A fair warning though, if you crave a deep storyline and don't like additional challenges or levels the fun will end quickly. But if you love first person shooters and tend to max out every game you own, you might just have found your new favorite FPS. It's original and unique and deserves your attention.

Divorced from the need to spotlight its commentary or be clever, Superhot's shootouts make its case better than its narrative layers ever could. Its methodical take on shooter combat forces you to linger on the consequences of your actions without saying a word. And that's all it needed to be. But when it tries to connect the dots for you, it feels overbearing and self-congratulatory, diluting the potency of its novelty.

The number of abilities successfully translated from "scripted sequences only" to organic gameplay is usually a solid metric of an action game's quality, and by that criteria, SUPERHOT excels. Its intense gameplay and layered narrative will delight fans of both the aggressive and the analytical simultaneously. While a lot of its innovation is clearly untested, its memetic presence is sure to be a talking point among indie fans for a long time to come.

There are many words that could be used to describe SUPERHOT. Cool, addictive, stylish, fun, enjoyable…take your pick. What the development team have done is take a game mechanic that sounds like an excellent idea on paper and turned it into something special by fleshing out a game around it that does it justice and then layering on different ways of playing in the post-game. It flat out tells you to say this but we'd be saying it anyway: SUPERHOT is one of the most innovative shooters that we've played in years. Absolutely essential.

A concise central mechanic, framed by a clever, form-twisting premise and outstanding design in art and sound. Other games wish they could be this cool.
