How this score was computed
The VGC Score is a weighted blend on a press-comparable 0-100 quality scale. Steam approval rates are first calibrated (95% positive on Steam ≈ 89.5 quality, since Steam approval skews high). Press and tracked creator reviews each count ~2x a player review and share one cap against player evidence (creator buy/skip calls pool into an approval rate, calibrated like Steam approval); all-time sentiment is capped and halved (it's context, not verdict); reviews of the current build carry the most weight when a fresh patch anchors the window; and a 'typical game' prior keeps small samples from pegging the scale. Because press reviews and Metacritic user aggregates describe the launch build, their weight decays as the game ages (3-year half-life after a 1-year grace). That's how a game that launched rough can outgrow its old reception once updates win players over. Reviews under 2h playtime (the refund window), non-Steam activations, and free copies are downweighted.

Featuring precise gameplay enhanced by excellent momentum, charismatic characters, and a charming aesthetic, the game brings one of gaming’s most infamous mascots back into the spotlight, and, if all goes well, this time he’s here to stay. The team at Fabraz has once again delivered a top-tier platformer and, despite a few aspects that could still be improved here and there, in some cases unrelated to the studio itself, there’s no denying that we are looking at one of the best platform games of 2026.”

“Bubsy 4D isn’t a spectacular comeback that would turn the once-ridiculed mascot into a new star of the genre, but it is certainly the best and most ambitious instalment in the entire series. Fabraz has managed to capture the energy of classic platformers and enrich it with more modern movement options, making jumping around in the fur of this chatty, cat-like beast more fun than ever before. On the other hand, the game doesn’t feel quite as polished as earlier projects from the same developers and is unlikely to charm many players who haven’t yet developed a positive relationship with the platformer genre.”

“At $20, Bubsy 4D is a solid budget platformer with levels that are consistently fun, if somewhat underbaked. Admittedly a low bar, it is comfortably the best Bubsy game ever made, with genuinely great controls and speedrunning depth that will reward players who relish climbing leaderboards and shaving seconds off their runtimes.It's an easy recommendation for anyone with a soft spot for '90s mascot platformers or morbid curiosity in the Bubsy franchise. For a series that spent decades as a byword for bad game design, Bubsy 4D is a long-overdue course correction for one of gaming's most persistently maligned characters and a strong foundation for future titles.”

“Bubsy 4D has some charm and seminal fun in its platforming, as well as spot-on controls and feel. However, the stages aren't that memorable, and it's over so quick unless you're doing Nine Lives/Tank mode and practicing for future speedrunning, and is very bare longevity-wise. Even for indie gaming standards, there's a good number of cracks that make this sequel feel more like a cash-in rather than a genuine send-off, as lovely-sounding as its soundtrack is.”

“Is Bubsy finally great? Not really, but he is finally enjoyable. Bubsy 4D can look a bit ostentatious, most of the jokes fall flat, and it has an absurdly short run time, but this is the best the Bubster has ever been. Most people have never taken Bubsy seriously, but maybe they should, as 4D proves there’s real potential in the character if it just had a bit more of that X-factor.”

“In some ways, Bubsy 4D is the best the series has ever been; the bobcat's wide range of abilities affords him a huge amount of freedom to move through levels with style. However, a fairly narrow focus on movement means other aspects suffer; enemies may as well not be there, and stages are static and sparsely furnished. The result is a good 3D platforming character stuck in a pretty bland 3D platformer.”

“Contrary to all expectations one might have had for the franchise Bubsy 4D delivers competent gameplay and a fun experience. It's an entertaining and well-made platformer that invites you to speedrunning it with mechanics that encourage absurd maneuvers. The only downside is the game's length. On one hand it's the highest praise a game can receive to wish for more. On the other hand the game's 15 levels are completed so quickly that you wonder if that's all there is. If you're motivated to achieve 100% completion and start climbing leaderboards Bubsy 4D definitely has more to offer, but a few more worlds would have made the experience way more satisfying.”
