How this score was computed

The VGC Score is a weighted blend on a press-comparable 0-100 quality scale. Steam approval rates are first calibrated (95% positive on Steam ≈ 89.5 quality, since Steam approval skews high). Press and tracked creator reviews each count ~2x a player review and share one cap against player evidence (creator buy/skip calls pool into an approval rate, calibrated like Steam approval); all-time sentiment is capped and halved (it's context, not verdict); reviews of the current build carry the most weight when a fresh patch anchors the window; and a 'typical game' prior keeps small samples from pegging the scale. Because press reviews and Metacritic user aggregates describe the launch build, their weight decays as the game ages (3-year half-life after a 1-year grace). That's how a game that launched rough can outgrow its old reception once updates win players over. Reviews under 2h playtime (the refund window), non-Steam activations, and free copies are downweighted.

Ninja Gaiden 2 Black is one of the best experiences for fans of the hack-and-slash genre. However, it is certainly not the best version of Ninja Gaiden 2; there have been many versions of this game, and the original version remains the best. The game did not offer the perfect difficulty like the original version, but it provided an overall enjoyable experience. I did not find a real justification for this remaster other than it brought back beautiful memories of a beautiful game I played many years ago in 2008. In summary, this version is the second-best version after the original, and I encourage everyone to try it, especially since it is available on the Xbox Game Pass Ultimate service on Xbox Series X|S and PC.

Ninja Gaiden 2 Black is a double-edged sword. The graphical improvements are welcome, and the gameplay remains extremely fun, even with some limitations inherent to a game released almost 17 years ago. However, once again, Ninja Gaiden 2 fails to have a definitive version. This remaster does not fix the problems of the original game and even removes some content. Still, Ninja Gaiden 2 Black provides an engaging experience and continues to be a great entry point into the franchise, just as it was for me during my playthrough.

Ninja Gaiden 2 Black is the ultimate action game that will appeal even to hardcore gamers. It offers a complex combat system, stunning visuals, and an unforgettable challenge. Although the story isn’t particularly deep, the camera can be frustrating, and the checkpoints are spaced out oddly, the great combat and smooth controls more than make up for it. Plus, the game features excellent audio. If you set aside everything you know about the series, it stands on its own as a very good, entertaining title.

Ninja Gaiden 2 Black is a tight hack and slash, full of fluidity that sees blood, guts and dismembered limbs fly all over the shop. The story is very wobbly, but among the over the top violence is a challenging game designed to test your skills as a ninja, and while the game is tough, even on its easiest setting, it never feels unfair. Team Ninja encourages you to try different approaches to boss fights so that when you do ultimately prevail, there is a great sense of achievement.

Purists may lament that this isn't a true update of the original Ninja Gaiden II, as Ninja Gaiden II Black uses the Sigma 2 port as its base, but what has been put together here is still an incredibly fulfilling hack and slash action game that absolutely is one of the best in the genre. In a time where more and more franchises are going down the open and freer route, this is a reminder that a more linear and confined approach works wonders for this type of game.

Ninja Gaiden 2 Black is the classic old school title. Born at a time when the market for action games was profoundly different. Difficult, forbidding, mechanically deep, and devoid of any simplification, with Ninja Gaiden 2 Itagaki had a clear idea of how to test players. With this new version of the title, which takes its full measure from Ninja Gaiden 2 and Sigma 2, the developers a milestone of action that will be able to make the historical fans of the series happy and bring closer all those players looking for a demanding and satisfying challenge, especially if they are children of the various souls like and the like. A great pity for not daring more from the renovation point of view, leaving intact all the gameplay with attached camera glitches, the real unbeatable boss of the game. This is a great opportunity to catch up with the Ninja Gaiden saga, in addition to this new edition of the second chapter, you can download the complete trilogy via the Ninja Gaiden Master Collection, which you can find on all stores, while waiting for the next upcoming titles such as Ninja Gaiden: Ragebound coming this summer, developed The Game Kitchen and this fall with Ninja Gaiden 4 that will see the collaboration between Team Ninja and Platinum Games.

Ninja Gaiden 2 Black reminds us of our younger years, essentially playing through a cheesy action movie with over-the-top violence, cool looking vistas, and a ridiculous story. In parts, it’s fun to play something you can just enjoy for what it is, without the need to delve into overly deep combat systems.

Ninja Gaiden 2 Black is the definitive version of the Xbox 360 classic, delivering the frantic and brutal gameplay of its original release with beautifully updated graphics and stable performance. Although it inherits some issues from the original release and introduces a few new ones, Ninja Gaiden 2 Black is the ultimate version of Koei Tecmo's great classic, revitalizing one of the best hack'n slash games of all time.

Ninja Gaiden 2 Black marks the beginning of the series' comeback, and what a comeback it is! The game offers fast and fun combat in the typical Hack and Slash style, this reason alone justifies giving it a try given the lack of games in this genre at the moment, and Black is a good opportunity to experience the game with excellent graphics thanks to Unreal Engine 5, even if there are some lingering issues from the original game.

Ninja Gaiden 2 Black is a title that undeniably came out of nowhere, especially considering that Team Ninja had already compiled the Sigma versions of the first two games along with Razor’s Edge from the third entry. While the “new black” may not be the definitive edition of the series' second installment, it makes up for it by being the uncensored, most visually stunning, smoothest, most modern, balanced, and content-rich (with minor exceptions) version, ultimately making it the best edition of the game. As an action title, it remains an absolutely top-tier experience, with its straightforward journey providing excellent entertainment from start to finish.
