How this score was computed
The VGC Score is a weighted blend on a press-comparable 0-100 quality scale. Steam approval rates are first calibrated (95% positive on Steam ≈ 89.5 quality, since Steam approval skews high). Press and tracked creator reviews each count ~2x a player review and share one cap against player evidence (creator buy/skip calls pool into an approval rate, calibrated like Steam approval); all-time sentiment is capped and halved (it's context, not verdict); reviews of the current build carry the most weight when a fresh patch anchors the window; and a 'typical game' prior keeps small samples from pegging the scale. Because press reviews and Metacritic user aggregates describe the launch build, their weight decays as the game ages (3-year half-life after a 1-year grace). That's how a game that launched rough can outgrow its old reception once updates win players over. Reviews under 2h playtime (the refund window), non-Steam activations, and free copies are downweighted.
| Component | Positive | Quality (0-100) | Weight (pseudo-reviews) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Press reviews (OpenCritic) | – | 79 | 101 |
| All-time Steam reviews | 96% | 91 | 1000 |
| Metacritic user ratings | – | – | 0 |
| Post-patch Steam reviews (trust-weighted) | 95% | 90 | 1412 |
| Calibration prior (typical game) | – | 72 | 50 |
Acclaim gate: the raw blend lands at 89.8, but scores above 88 must be earned in front of a mass audience; this verdict rests on 3,392 player reviews, a largely self-selected fanbase. As more players weigh in, the ceiling rises (full scale unlocks at 100,000 reviews).

“OFF (2025) is both a faithful restoration and a bold reinterpretation of a game that changed indie RPGs forever. It preserves the unsettling surrealism that made the original iconic, while modernizing its systems and presentation for today’s players. Yes, the soundtrack debate will rage on. And yes, some purists may insist the original remains untouchable. But judged as a standalone experience, this remake is one of the most compelling and strange RPGs you can play today. If you’ve never purified the Zones before, now’s the time.”

“OFF is one of the most out-there titles I've played. It's a creative game that's sure to leave an impression. The turn-based battles are satisfying, the puzzles are some of the toughest and most creative I've seen in recent years, and the visual style stands out. If you're a fan of quirky titles, this one is worth checking out.”

“OFF is a decent remaster of a great game and ultimately stands as a worthy return to this watershed moment in the 'weird' side of the indie RPG scene. Its memorable story, engaging combat, and challenging puzzles all combine to make for a brisk and enjoyable RPG adventure that no fan of the genre will want to miss. Even though the additions in this remaster feel a bit minimal, OFF is overall well worth batting for.”

“OFF is an unnerving dream that steeps one foot into a fever-soaked nightmare. This surrealist approach makes it a truly trendsetting experience with how the characters, story, and visual presentation meld into a highly artistic personal journey that is not like anything else. Combat is always serviceable and the new balanced approach to buffs and debuffs allows extra time for deciphering puzzle clues, making them less frustrating to deal with. The nuanced layers added from the original soundtrack are definitely missed, but the muted melancholy the new soundtrack provides is still a trip to experience. If surrealism mixed with an uncanny sense of wrongness sounds enticing, then OFF will not disappoint.”

“OFF is recommended for those seeking an unconventional experience, with a strong authorial vision and a passionate community always ready to theorize about the worldbuilding. It's a title that prioritizes emotional experience and atmosphere over complex gameplay or abundant optional content. If you loved Omori or Undertale, know that their spiritual predecessor will be able to deliver more than a few moments of joy in its brief, but intense, hours of gameplay.”

“Off has always been a strange, atmospheric, and undeniably influential RPG - one that’s ultimately more compelling for its ideas than for its gameplay. This remaster is easily the best way to experience it, thanks to its various QoL improvements, even if the new soundtrack may prove divisive among long-time fans. Combat and pacing issues prevent it from standing shoulder to shoulder with the genre’s greats, but its bizarre world, cryptic storytelling, and historical importance still make it a fascinating curiosity for lovers of unconventional indies. You may not end up liking it that much, but it’s the kind of game that’s worth experiencing at least once.”

“While it has a sort of odd charm to its simplicity and vibes, odd puzzles and repetitive combat slowly erode excitement and interest”

“OFF is an interesting and thought provoking RPG. You should be able to beat it in under ten hours, which is solid for its $14.99 price tag.”

“OFF is a re-relase that, although timid and without major significant changes other than the new areas and bosses, still represents a surreal, unusual, fun and meaningful game, revitalizing and attracting a new audience to what is a true milestone for the modern indie industry.”

“Playing OFF, you can see why it has enjoyed a huge cultural impact over the last 17 years. It’s a timeless piece that pushes what we believe to be standard video game convention, and the added content is a loving epilogue for long-time fans.”

“Everything is off about the world of OFF, but it encourages you to want to know more about it, and it never feels like it’s just another game. The world and characters are memorable. If you have any interest in Undertale, Everhood, or other RPGs of the sort, I’d recommend not passing this up, as OFF inspired them all.”
