How this score was computed

The VGC Score is a weighted blend on a press-comparable 0-100 quality scale. Steam approval rates are first calibrated (95% positive on Steam ≈ 89.5 quality, since Steam approval skews high). Press and tracked creator reviews each count ~2x a player review and share one cap against player evidence (creator buy/skip calls pool into an approval rate, calibrated like Steam approval); all-time sentiment is capped and halved (it's context, not verdict); reviews of the current build carry the most weight when a fresh patch anchors the window; and a 'typical game' prior keeps small samples from pegging the scale. Because press reviews and Metacritic user aggregates describe the launch build, their weight decays as the game ages (3-year half-life after a 1-year grace). That's how a game that launched rough can outgrow its old reception once updates win players over. Reviews under 2h playtime (the refund window), non-Steam activations, and free copies are downweighted.

After the EA SPORTS FC 25 installment, which is considered the least successful entry, EA SPORTS FC 26 was released to us with excellent additions and the improvements requested by the audience, to be a distinctive experience for fans of the series and football fans in general. The gameplay became smoother and more responsive with the addition of play options that suit competitive and individual modes, and improvements to skill moves, jostling, goalkeeping, and player AI made their positioning more accurate and logical. However, it faced minor issues in entering matches and making some game content, such as boost features and cosmetic elements for the other modes, restricted to the ULTIMATE TEAM season.

EA Sports FC 26 brings an exceptionally refined soccer simulation to the series, which it further divides into competitive and authentic modes, thereby clearly separating offline play from multiplayer. However, it buries its qualities under a dozen confusing menus, repetitive animations, and aggressive monetization. FC 26 tries so hard to be for everyone that it may actually be for no one. And that's the worst thing that can happen to a brand. However, fans of previous editions will be happy to continue with this year's edition.

The depth of customization - from controls and game tempo to tactical nuances and role assignments on the field - is genuinely impressive and engaging. The positional setups and other elements of football strategy have strong potential, but that potential simply isn't realized. Of course, some players might enjoy this kind of "football-flavored" experience, but it's definitely not what I - or many fans of the world's most popular sport - are looking for. If you plan to play only against AI opponents, or if the issues mentioned above don't bother you, feel free to add one or two points to the final score.

EA Sports FC 26 is a step in the right direction for players who have long wanted more authenticity in gameplay. The new Authentic Gameplay allows for a more tactical, slower-paced, and realistic soccer experience, where every decision on the field carries weight. Offline players and Career Mode fans finally have reasons to keep coming back to the game. On the other hand, FUT still suffers from aggressive monetization, and some game mechanics could use a more thorough overhaul. FC 26 is a solid evolution of the series, but it’s still waiting for a true revolution.

And it opens the door to further feedback and improvements to aspects that have gone unaddressed for years. There are certainly two ways to play these football games. And by recognising that fact, EA Sports FC 26 becomes a football game for the players, even if it is a little bit more for one kind of player.

EA's Switch 2 football debut is a night-and-day difference from its half-hearted Switch one, setting a great precedent for the future of the series. EA Sports FC 26 delivers a fully-featured version of the game, and while it only runs at 30fps and has a gated-off Ultimate Team mode which doesn't tap into the series' larger crossplay community, it still plays a fantastic game of football and offers more game modes than you'll ever know what to do with.

Despite the massive marketing push and promises of a “revolution,” EA FC 26 ends up feeling all too familiar, a shiny coat of paint over the same arcade-style gameplay. The new “Authentic” mode offers a touch of realism, but online matches are still a chaotic mess. EA’s continued obsession with microtransactions and the clumsy integration of women’s players into FUT only reinforce the impression that, once again, style has triumphed over substance.

It’s hard to call FC 26 the major step forward it was hyped to be, a few things are improved, but others were inexplicably made worse.

With every annual football release from EA, the same question arises: “Is the game this time just an update of rosters and kits, or does it offer an experience worth the player’s time and money?” In the case of EA Sports FC 26, it can be said that the answer is more balanced. The game hasn’t overturned the foundations of the series nor radically changed the core experience, but it has focused on fixing what annoyed players last year and refining what was already good. So, is FC 26 worth trying? Yes, it definitely is. It may not be a complete revolution that redefines football games, but it’s a confident step forward that makes it better than FC 25 in most important aspects. If you’re a fan of the series, you’ll find yourself with a more polished and mature version, and if you’re thinking of returning after a break, this is a good opportunity to experience one of the most balanced releases in recent years.

A step in the right direction, EA FC 26 on Nintendo Switch 2 still boasts some annoying grievances, but it’s still worth the purchase if you value on-the-go gaming.

EA Sports FC 26 makes some big changes to its systems, modes and gameplay. The most obvious of these are quite effective, and even those that aren’t seen are surely felt. The fresh additions to Career Mode are a step in the right direction, while the on-field adjustments and introduction of Authentic and Competitive modes serves to freshen things up just enough for another year. Long-time players will likely still have some recurring gripes, but the best compliment that can be paid to FC 26 is that it’s fun. If this was developer EA Sports’ sole aim, then mission accomplished.
