How this score was computed
The VGC Score is a weighted blend on a press-comparable 0-100 quality scale. Steam approval rates are first calibrated (95% positive on Steam ≈ 89.5 quality, since Steam approval skews high). Press and tracked creator reviews each count ~2x a player review and share one cap against player evidence (creator buy/skip calls pool into an approval rate, calibrated like Steam approval); all-time sentiment is capped and halved (it's context, not verdict); reviews of the current build carry the most weight when a fresh patch anchors the window; and a 'typical game' prior keeps small samples from pegging the scale. Because press reviews and Metacritic user aggregates describe the launch build, their weight decays as the game ages (3-year half-life after a 1-year grace). That's how a game that launched rough can outgrow its old reception once updates win players over. Reviews under 2h playtime (the refund window), non-Steam activations, and free copies are downweighted.

“NBA 2K26 is both an improvement and a letdown depending on your expectations. On the one hand, the gameplay is smoother, offense feels fantastic, and ProPLAY™ continues to make animations eerily realistic. On the other, defense is lackluster, microtransactions remain pervasive, and the PC experience is held back by poor anti-cheat and a small community. If you’re a hardcore basketball fan who enjoys grinding MyCAREER or collecting in MyTEAM, you’ll find hours of entertainment here. If you’re new or casual, be prepared for a steep learning curve, and possibly a steep cost if you want to compete at higher levels. It’s not the slam dunk fans have been begging for, but it’s at least a smooth layup that gets the job done., Asmodeus”

“NBA 2K26 should look and perform better on the Switch 2. It should also tone it down with all of the microtransaction noise on top of an already $70 game. But if you're willing to overlook those issues, you'll get a game that's a lot of fun to play and provides many ways to play it.”

“NBA 2K26 represents a significant and welcome step in the right direction. After years of stagnation and controversial changes, the developers have focused on what matters most: gameplay on the court. Thanks to the new shooting system and significantly improved movement, playing basketball is more fun and satisfying than ever before. Add to that the best MyCareer story mode in recent years and an unrivaled audiovisual presentation, and we have a contender for the best installment in the series in a long time. However, the game still stumbles in the same, all-too-familiar areas: the neglect of offline modes, the ever-present shadow of microtransactions, and the W campaign.”

“NBA 2K26 on Switch 2 fails to deliver the 60fps gameplay we've all been holding out for. It also runs at a lower resolution than I would have expected, and its online modes, thanks to no cross-play or cross-progression are ghost towns.However, if this is your only platform, and if you are okay with 30fps, there is still a huge festival of basketball to enjoy here. This is a game packed full of fun modes, and it'll teach you everything you could ever need to know about the sport whilst giving you some fine on-court action to boot. Here's hoping for a patch down the line, but 2K26 comes off as a great game underperforming on Switch 2 at launch.”

“Even for a laidback fan that has had very little experience with basketball games, it is easy to see the quality of NBA 2K26. Matches are end-to-end score fests that satisfy in both solo and multiplayer matches, but it can be an overwhelming experience for the newcomer. Dedication and patience are required to fully enjoy the depth on offer. Although the Switch 2 edition is comparatively less impressive in visuals and framerates as other versions, this is far from a massive issue for anyone keen for a top portable sports simulator. Sadly, the pay-to-win mechanics for online modes are a huge blight.”

“Even with longer load times and slightly lesser visuals, NBA 2K26 is a gigantic game packed with a ton of variety. You can shoot hoops in all sorts of ways. You can roleplay out your dreams of running an NBA team or try to carve out your path as a player, whether it's in the NBA or WNBA. Hopefully this is the start of another dynastic run for the series on Nintendo platforms, because what's here is great.”

“Once again, NBA 2K has become a real hit. The 26th edition not only impresses with a noticeably optimized gaming experience on the court with better animations and a more realistic feel, but also in terms of atmosphere and lifestyle, especially in the open city, the simulation is unrivaled. Also nice is the cross-play between Xbox and PlayStation players, as well as the once again extremely extensive selection of game modes, both online and offline, including a wide-ranging training area in Learn2K. The player career in the open game world with its numerous possibilities, the GM career with its walk-in headquarters, and the elaborately staged The W mode of the WNBA are particularly memorable. This also applies to the elaborately implemented high school experience, which impresses with its compelling story. Whether the newly introduced Seasons with their heavily promoted real-money Season Pass variants were really necessary is another question. The somewhat boringly staged draft at the GM and the partially unsound conversations also cloud the overall impression a little, but they don't change the fact that NBA 2K26 is an outstanding basketball game with countless opportunities for entertainment on and off the court.”
