How this score was computed
The VGC Score is a weighted blend on a press-comparable 0-100 quality scale. Steam approval rates are first calibrated (95% positive on Steam ≈ 89.5 quality, since Steam approval skews high). Press and tracked creator reviews each count ~2x a player review and share one cap against player evidence (creator buy/skip calls pool into an approval rate, calibrated like Steam approval); all-time sentiment is capped and halved (it's context, not verdict); reviews of the current build carry the most weight when a fresh patch anchors the window; and a 'typical game' prior keeps small samples from pegging the scale. Because press reviews and Metacritic user aggregates describe the launch build, their weight decays as the game ages (3-year half-life after a 1-year grace). That's how a game that launched rough can outgrow its old reception once updates win players over. Reviews under 2h playtime (the refund window), non-Steam activations, and free copies are downweighted.
| Component | Positive | Quality (0-100) | Weight (pseudo-reviews) |

| All-time Steam reviews | 47% | 50 | 1000 |
| Metacritic user ratings | – | 32 | 494 |
| Post-patch Steam reviews (trust-weighted) | 62% | 61 | 2301 |

“Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III is the first real failure in the series. Activision needs to immediately rethink the production process of the series, because unfortunately the declining form has continued for several years, and we are already approaching the bottom very quickly. Let's hope that now, under the leadership of Xbox, the planning and mindset of those in charge of the series will change, because at this point it's headed for a huge loss in the public eye.”

“Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III is a work that should never have been made. The fact that it was initially supposed to be an expansion of the previous title speaks volumes. The sequel blatantly copies what the series came up with long ago and in an even more dysfunctional way. The title is in the vein of Warzone's battle royale mode, which is crammed into both the campaign and zombies mode, and the multiplayer delivers virtually identical gameplay, environments, and weapons to what we played last year. Not even great graphics or technical artistry can salvage the fact that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III is below average.”

“There’s probably no need to say much more: Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III is, at its core, entertaining, but it’s simply another entry in a series that, for some reason, is unable or unwilling to bring about any major revolution and continues to revolve around the same gameplay, the same content, and, unfortunately, a below-average campaign this time around. While the campaign did attempt to introduce an innovative element in the form of open-world missions, the idea ultimately feels half-baked and actually drags the single-player campaign down even further. Five out of ten.”

“Activision had earlier decided against releasing a CoD title this year, opting instead for a “premium expansion” for Modern Warfare II. The publisher, perhaps scared of the financial repercussions of not sticking to an annual release cycle, later decided MW III to be a standalone entry. All the evidence from MW III's campaign, however, points at little effort to do so. With rehashed missions, lazy Warzone style sections, and a sore lack of typical Call of Duty knockout set pieces, Modern Warfare III does not feel like a full game, especially at that $70 price point. The original Modern Warfare games redefined the first-person shooter genre; the trilogy's uninspired rerun, on the other hand, represents its decay.”

“Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III (2023)'s campaign is comically bad, its Zombies mode is zonked and its multiplayer just kind of sucks.”

“Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III is a disappointing new entry in the franchise that should never have seen the light of day.”

“CoD: Modern Warfare III is a glorified DLC that should cost no more than $10. This is a ridiculous attempt at a “game” that has literally no new maps and a campaign that is set in Verdansk, a map from the first Warzone installment that was released four years ago! One of the worst gaming experiences.”

“If you hope to see the series’ campaign design feel like it’s not simply going through the motions, rehashing past glories and not half-baking potential new ideas, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III will leave you wanting.”

“Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3 single-player campaign does blow me away and feels like a rushed attempt at finishing the trilogy. What showed signs of promise in the lead-up to release with Vladimir Makarov making a return, I was excited to see what Sledgehammer Games had done. However, it instead ends up being a lackluster attempt to relive the glory days from twelve years ago. Some story missions had moments of enjoyment but it’s attempted to introduce new open combat missions designed as an interesting premise but doesn’t work when you put it into the campaign.”

“Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3 feels more like a DLC to Modern Warfare 2 than a title in its own right. The campaign mode is extremely short and poorly handled, while the multiplayer is plagued by an unbalanced meta and SBMM. The zombie mode gets a makeover, winking at Warzone and making it an extraction game.”

“Overall, Modern Warfare III seems to follow the narrative tone of Modern Warfare 2019 more closely than it does that of Modern Warfare II. Regarding gameplay, I'd hesitate to make a similar claim as the gameplay in this instalment stands out in its uniqueness compared to past versions. Despite this, I found the story quite enjoyable and eagerly anticipate its continuation.”

“Even by the tempered expectations of this fatigued franchise, Modern Warfare III deserves nothing less than a dishonorable discharge.”
