How this score was computed
The VGC Score is a weighted blend on a press-comparable 0-100 quality scale. Steam approval rates are first calibrated (95% positive on Steam ≈ 89.5 quality, since Steam approval skews high). Press and tracked creator reviews each count ~2x a player review and share one cap against player evidence (creator buy/skip calls pool into an approval rate, calibrated like Steam approval); all-time sentiment is capped and halved (it's context, not verdict); reviews of the current build carry the most weight when a fresh patch anchors the window; and a 'typical game' prior keeps small samples from pegging the scale. Because press reviews and Metacritic user aggregates describe the launch build, their weight decays as the game ages (3-year half-life after a 1-year grace). That's how a game that launched rough can outgrow its old reception once updates win players over. Reviews under 2h playtime (the refund window), non-Steam activations, and free copies are downweighted.

“As it is, The Incident at Galley House is a confident mystery, but an underwhelming puzzler. Had it taken more risks with the original script (if only to make for smoother voice acting, much less take advantage of the new visuals) and incorporated some of the non-linear puzzle design I’ve come to love from Evil Trout, it could have been a transcendent detective video game. Instead, it’s a safe play that feels like a massive missed opportunity.”

“Towards the end, a few puzzles feel overly difficult compared to the rest of the experience, and the conclusion drags on a bit too long. Despite these minor flaws, The Incident at Galley House is an excellent summer mystery, offering just the right level of challenge, an intriguing plot, and a unique overall feel. Through its mixture of interesting gameplay mechanics, mystifying narrative, wonderful sound design, and excellent accessibility options. It lets itself down slightly with the death scenes, but it has still ended up being one of my most positive experiences of the year. It does, however, beg the question that maybe some things are best left in the past.”

And above all, it’s a game that genuinely challenges you to think and deduce rather than simply follow the story. “It's a strange one, though, because even though Galley House has greater production values and is certainly more accessible (and is a game I would still recommend), I wouldn't say it is the best way to experience the game and the story, depending on your personal preferences. I actually think Galley House's presentation makes the story less impactful overall, compared to the original game. ”
