How this score was computed
The VGC Score is a weighted blend on a press-comparable 0-100 quality scale. Steam approval rates are first calibrated (95% positive on Steam ≈ 89.5 quality, since Steam approval skews high). Press and tracked creator reviews each count ~2x a player review and share one cap against player evidence (creator buy/skip calls pool into an approval rate, calibrated like Steam approval); all-time sentiment is capped and halved (it's context, not verdict); reviews of the current build carry the most weight when a fresh patch anchors the window; and a 'typical game' prior keeps small samples from pegging the scale. Because press reviews and Metacritic user aggregates describe the launch build, their weight decays as the game ages (3-year half-life after a 1-year grace). That's how a game that launched rough can outgrow its old reception once updates win players over. Reviews under 2h playtime (the refund window), non-Steam activations, and free copies are downweighted.
| Component | Positive | Quality (0-100) | Weight (pseudo-reviews) |

| Press reviews (OpenCritic) | – | 66 | 7 |
| All-time Steam reviews | 86% | 80 | 89 |
| Metacritic user ratings | – | – | 0 |
| Post-patch Steam reviews (trust-weighted) | 100% | 97 | 0 |
| Calibration prior (typical game) | – | 72 | 50 |

“Super Mutant Alien Assault might be the Citizen Kane of Super Crate Box clones, but in the larger scope of video games it's more of a summer popcorn flick, diverting, good-looking, but ultimately lacking the depth to become a classic.”

“Not much time is required to get through the levels since each level only takes a few minutes to complete and there are not many. The replayability comes from the difficulty spike with each new world, and the fact that there are plenty of items and abilities that can be unlocked and adjusted for each new run through. Along with this the co-op aspect makes it a very enjoyable game to spend an hour or two playing with friends.”

“Pitting you against wave after wave of alien attackers, Super Mutant Alien Assault's randomised levels will put your action platforming skills to the test. It can be a bit short if you're just going to play the campaign, though endless mode and co-op can offer a bit of a distraction beyond that. It might not have too much longevity, but Super Mutant Alien Assault is a fun little game to challenge yourself with.”

“Super Mutant Alien Assault is fun and challenging so if you’re in the mood to blast aliens with lots of different weapons and abilities check this one out. The game is rather inexpensive and it can be fun with a friend. I recommend it.”

“Super Mutant Alien Assualt is a classic "pick-up and play", a fun platform game with rougle-like elements. It's cool and engaging with lots of weapons and upbeat dubstep tracks, though it falls short when it comes to level design and visuals. The game has two different modes and a Co-Op option to play with your friends. Super Mutant Alien Assualt is a game that worths your ime and money.”

“Super Mutant Alien Assault is one of those titles that are love or hate, but it still remains a very valid and challenging game even for those most accustomed to the genre it is part of.”

“Super Mutant Alien Assault has a lot to offer in terms of pure, unadulterated arcade action”

“Super Mutant Alien Assault may not have an excellent title, but it makes up for this with it’s fantastic and furiously frantic gameplay. I can’t wait to go back and experiment with the weapon library, which I hope gets expanded in the future. At the end of the day, this alien killing masterpiece is not a lesson in anger, just good passionate fun.”

“While I did enjoy my time with Super Mutant Alien Assault, I was a little surprised at how short the game was. Granted, you can and should put in more hours if you want replay value, but not every gamer will care about that. Some are just here for the main mission, and if that’s all that interests you, I can’t highly recommend Super Mutant Alien Assault for the asking price of $9.99. However, if you like hardcore retro games and want to unlock all the achievements and other goodies, then this game may just be for you. If nothing else, I look forward to the next title that Surprise Attack Games manages to cook up. Perhaps they’ll take what they learned from this game and use it to make a truly epic Metroidvania in a similar vein!”

“There is a certain player in mind with this style of game, and I’m well aware it’s not for everyone. If an arcade platform shooter is something you miss or just downright love, this is something you should grab now, because you’ll get your money’s worth out of it.”

“Super Mutant Alien Assault is a chaotically fun, yet simple experience.”

“Super Mutant Alien Assault is a game that is fun to play, looks and sounds good (if you’re into dubstep) and is constantly growing and changing as it is played, but just a bit rough on players very early on. A pretty good package for $9.99 on Steam, PS4, and Xbox One.”
