How this score was computed

The VGC Score is a weighted blend on a press-comparable 0-100 quality scale. Steam approval rates are first calibrated (95% positive on Steam ≈ 89.5 quality, since Steam approval skews high). Press and tracked creator reviews each count ~2x a player review and share one cap against player evidence (creator buy/skip calls pool into an approval rate, calibrated like Steam approval); all-time sentiment is capped and halved (it's context, not verdict); reviews of the current build carry the most weight when a fresh patch anchors the window; and a 'typical game' prior keeps small samples from pegging the scale. Because press reviews and Metacritic user aggregates describe the launch build, their weight decays as the game ages (3-year half-life after a 1-year grace). That's how a game that launched rough can outgrow its old reception once updates win players over. Reviews under 2h playtime (the refund window), non-Steam activations, and free copies are downweighted.

Resident Evil Requiem is a triumph. It successfully caters to both factions of the divided fanbase, offering the terrifying, puzzle-heavy dread of the early games alongside the slick, bombastic combat of the modern era. Grace Ashcroft is a fantastic addition to the lore, and Leon S. Kennedy remains the undisputed king of survival horror action. With its breathtaking visuals, incredible sound design, and near-perfect pacing, Requiem is an essential experience for horror fans and a crowning achievement for Capcom.

More than even the remakes, Resident Evil 9 celebrates the series’ legacy in its full breadth, and does so exquisitely.

The ninth installment of the Resident Evil series was able to take us on a journey that might be one of the best in the history of the series, a journey that blends revealing the secrets of the past and paving the way for the future, amidst an atmosphere saturated with horror and excitement throughout the experience. Capcom succeeded in presenting a wonderful story and a distinctive gameplay style; it even provided an experience that satisfied two audiences at once: the horror audience with the tension, survival, and mystery it carried, and the excitement audience with the enthusiastic encounters and thrilling moments it included. Despite the presence of some padding here and there, and the discarding of an important element that was an authentic part of the series' identity, which is puzzles, the final result was very strong and distinctive.

“A top-tier game representing two different schools of Resident Evil.”

Resident Evil Requiem is an amalgamation of different ideas, eras and creative intents. But instead of trying to harmonize them into a straightforward experience, the game does the opposite. It celebrates Resident Evil's legacy as a whole - as a horror game, an intense action, as a spy thriller, and as a science fiction. Resident Evil is all of those things simultaneously, and it has never been more apparent than now.

It’s strange to want to call a game as pointedly grim and gory as Requiem a good time, but that’s exactly the vibe it delivers, bathed in blood and polished to a high scarlet shine. Despite the suspense and terror, there’s still a playfully self-aware spring in Requiem’s step.

Capcom had the courage to introduce a brand-new protagonist alongside an iconic one, and it pays off. Requiem speaks two languages, whispered terror and thunderous action, with equal mastery. Not flawless, but unforgettable. Capcom still knows how to make you afraid. And much, much more.

Resident Evil Requiem is a showcase of the entire series in its modern form: a meticulously designed survival horror game that can be both claustrophobic and epic, all while keeping players on the edge of their seats. It takes what worked so well in RE4 and RE7 and brings it all together with confidence and top-notch production quality. I can’t think of a single reason why I should discourage anyone from playing it, but at the same time, expect the game to stick to well-trodden, tried-and-true paths and never try anything new.

Requiem's two-pronged experience could have ended up feeling repetitive; it could have been a jarring mishmash of incongruent parts. Instead, Capcom has sewn a connective tissue between fear and thrill. And Resident Evil Requiem finds everything else in the middle of those exhilarating extremes.

Resident Evil Requiem sets a new benchmark for a series that has been pretty consistently great for the last decade or so. By combining classic survival horror with the more action-focused gameplay of RE4, the result is an experience paced to perfection. Add in a lore-heavy narrative and copious easter eggs, and you've got what might be the ultimate expression of Resident Evil. There are a few minor visual hiccups along with some inconsistency in frame rate during busier moments, but the fact that we've got a brand-new flagship RE game running well on Switch 2 should be celebrated. The lack of a Mercenaries Mode feels like a missed opportunity, but I've got my fingers crossed that it eventually shows up.
