How this score was computed
The VGC Score is a weighted blend on a press-comparable 0-100 quality scale. Steam approval rates are first calibrated (95% positive on Steam ≈ 89.5 quality, since Steam approval skews high). Press and tracked creator reviews each count ~2x a player review and share one cap against player evidence (creator buy/skip calls pool into an approval rate, calibrated like Steam approval); all-time sentiment is capped and halved (it's context, not verdict); reviews of the current build carry the most weight when a fresh patch anchors the window; and a 'typical game' prior keeps small samples from pegging the scale. Because press reviews and Metacritic user aggregates describe the launch build, their weight decays as the game ages (3-year half-life after a 1-year grace). That's how a game that launched rough can outgrow its old reception once updates win players over. Reviews under 2h playtime (the refund window), non-Steam activations, and free copies are downweighted.
| Component | Positive | Quality (0-100) | Weight (pseudo-reviews) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Press reviews (OpenCritic) | – | 76 | 200 |
| All-time Steam reviews | 87% | 81 | 1000 |
| Metacritic user ratings | – | 84 | 92 |
| Post-patch Steam reviews (trust-weighted) | 92% | 87 | 50 |
| Calibration prior (typical game) | – | 72 | 50 |

“If you can look past the locked 60 FPS on PC, the occasionally clunky combat stamina, and the exhausting late-game encounter rates, you will find one of the most culturally rich, terrifying adventure games on the market. It is a faithful, loving restoration of a PS2 classic that deserves to be played, just make sure you have a comfort item nearby.”

“Although some of the new Camera Obscura features exacerbate an already unwieldy control system, Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly Remake does more than enough to please fans of this outstanding and highly distinctive series. Play it with the lights off.”

“FATAL FRAME II: Crimson Butterfly REMAKE turned out to be a worthy remake that still makes concessions to a new audience.”

“The logic of Team Ninja’s brutal skill-intensive action games is there, yet its admixture with classic survival horror’s slow-paced interest in maintaining player desperation produces a system as liable to inspire frustration as fear.”

“Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly Remake is probably the best and most accessible way today to experience one of the most acclaimed series in the survival horror genre. The use of the Katana Engine has breathed a captivating, darkly beautiful visual style into the decaying village of Minakami, while the modernized camera system helps you better navigate the environment. If you appreciate the game’s fidelity to the aesthetics of Japanese horror films and its focus on building a suffocating atmosphere over action and an intuitive combat system, this is the game for you.”

“Exactly what a good remake should be: respectful of the original, enriched with care, accessible to a new generation without losing its essence. Team Ninja handled an untouchable classic with precision, and it holds up.”

“Fatal Frame 2 isn't quite the home run some may have hoped for, but it's an overall enjoyable and worthwhile experience that I'd suggest picking up at some point.”

“The Crimson Butterfly returns. Are you ready to uncover the dark secrets of Minakami Village in Fatal Frame 2: Crimson Butterfly Remake?”

“'Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly REMAKE' is a masterclass in Japanese horror that stumbles just enough in its combat to keep it from being a perfect game, but not nearly enough to stop it from being an essential one. Team Ninja built something genuinely beautiful and genuinely terrifying here, and the fact that I'll never touch it again is probably the most honest four-and-a-half stars I've ever given anything.”

“Despite its flaws, I do keep thinking about the experience after I put the controller down. There’s something about Crimson Butterfly that sticks with you. Maybe it’s the setting, perhaps it’s the story, or maybe it’s just how vulnerable the gameplay makes you feel. Whatever it is, it works.”

“Fatal Frame II Crimson Butterfly story, the additions to the Fatal Frame universe, are incredibly engaging. If you love survival horror titles, then both this and it’s original incarnation, should be on your playlist.”

“Fatal Frame 2: Crimson Butterfly Remake is still one of the most compelling games to play, offering unique mechanics and a gripping story with perfect pacing. The additions this new edition brings to the table are enough to justify purchasing it even for those who have already gotten lost once in the streets of Minakami Village; however, the plethora of technical issues and some missteps in the implementation of the new mechanics prevent it from truly reaching greatness.”
