How this score was computed

The VGC Score is a weighted blend on a press-comparable 0-100 quality scale. Steam approval rates are first calibrated (95% positive on Steam ≈ 89.5 quality, since Steam approval skews high). Press and tracked creator reviews each count ~2x a player review and share one cap against player evidence (creator buy/skip calls pool into an approval rate, calibrated like Steam approval); all-time sentiment is capped and halved (it's context, not verdict); reviews of the current build carry the most weight when a fresh patch anchors the window; and a 'typical game' prior keeps small samples from pegging the scale. Because press reviews and Metacritic user aggregates describe the launch build, their weight decays as the game ages (3-year half-life after a 1-year grace). That's how a game that launched rough can outgrow its old reception once updates win players over. Reviews under 2h playtime (the refund window), non-Steam activations, and free copies are downweighted.

After 10 long years, the original extraction shooter is "finished." The 1.0 update and Steam launch make it the most complete, accessible, and feature-rich version of the game ever. The new campaign and tutorial are excellent additions. And yet, it's still Tarkov. It's a buggy, demanding, and uncompromisingly hardcore simulation that will punish you more than it rewards you. The "Mixed" Steam reviews are not wrong; this is a deeply flawed masterpiece that many will bounce off of, hard. But for those who it clicks with? There is simply nothing else like it., ColdMoon

Escape from Tarkov is an extreme game that demands time, dedication, a lot of patience, and a high tolerance for frustration. If you find yourself in this category, the game will offer you in return numerous moments of tension and rewards that few titles can match.

Escape From Tarkov 1.0 still feels unfinished, but its intense and unique experience is why it remains so compelling and widely played.

Escape from Tarkov's world is unforgiving, and is definitely not for casual play. Yet, its the challenge and engaging gameplay that makes it all the better. It's still weighed down by bugs and glitches and connection issues here and there, as well as the disappointing lack of (free) PvE, but it's a solid FPS extraction game for those looking for an extra hard challenge.

Singularly unforgiving, dizzyingly complex, and like no other FPS out there: the extraction shooter's extraction shooter.

Escape From Tarkov might have been one of the first major extraction shooters, but the genre as a whole still has a lot to learn from its core gameplay and how it builds up tension.

Escape from Tarkov delivers unmatched realism and punchy audio, but it’s still a ruthless, cluttered challenge with big technical problems. If you’re after an ultra-realistic shooter, this is the one, just be ready to treat it more like a lifestyle than a quick gaming session.

As the hardcore pioneer of the extraction shooter, Escape from Tarkov is still quite compelling, but it's also saddled with issues that range from technical problems to pay-to-win monetization.

As other hardcore shooters, it can be rough around the edges, with technical issues and an intimidating learning curve that may push away more casual players. Yet those flaws are often overshadowed by its unmatched tension and deep systems, where every raid becomes a high-stakes gamble and every piece of gear tells a story of survival. Escape from Tarkov isn’t an easy game to love, but its intense realism and unforgiving design make it one of the most distinctive shooters of its generation.

The underwhelming release version of a shooter classic that shines mainly thanks to its mercilessly realistic atmosphere.

Escape from Tarkov offers a unique and extremely intense gameplay experience driven by its atmosphere and the constant tension of every shootout. However, this potentially outstanding experience is systematically undermined by a catastrophic technical state, unstable servers, cheaters, and a design that too often confuses “hardcore” with outright hostility toward the player. The result is a game that comes close to legendary status more because of its reputation than the actual quality of its 1.0 version.
