How this score was computed

The VGC Score is a weighted blend on a press-comparable 0-100 quality scale. Steam approval rates are first calibrated (95% positive on Steam ≈ 89.5 quality, since Steam approval skews high). Press and tracked creator reviews each count ~2x a player review and share one cap against player evidence (creator buy/skip calls pool into an approval rate, calibrated like Steam approval); all-time sentiment is capped and halved (it's context, not verdict); reviews of the current build carry the most weight when a fresh patch anchors the window; and a 'typical game' prior keeps small samples from pegging the scale. Because press reviews and Metacritic user aggregates describe the launch build, their weight decays as the game ages (3-year half-life after a 1-year grace). That's how a game that launched rough can outgrow its old reception once updates win players over. Reviews under 2h playtime (the refund window), non-Steam activations, and free copies are downweighted.

Light Fall swiftly finds a spot among all the other Switch hardcore 2D platforming greats by offering not only a quality game wrapped in a beautifully unique atmosphere, but by successfully providing the player with a plot and characters that are worth investing, making the game very hard to set aside until you complete the tiny shadow-being quest. We found very little to complain about the whole package and as such have very little reserve in recommending you add yet another fantastic platform adventure to the growing list of titles already available on Switch.

An enjoyable balance of innovation and fundamental oldschool platforming.

When Light Fall is firing on all cylinders it feels absolutely incredible, and it’s easy to see where it will be terrific for people looking to get their speedrunning put to the test. The ramping up of challenge from stage to stage feels just about right and the boss battles force you to put all you’ve learned to good use. I think it’s Act 4 and the pretty abrupt change in style that will divide people, with some people undoubtedly liking the sudden stepping up of challenge and others throwing up their hands at the rug being pulled out from under them. The shame is there are some great challenges to be had off the beaten path but the game seems intent on punishing you for checking them out without offering a sufficient reward in return. Light Fall has quite a lot working for it, it just feels like it gets in the way of its own success before the story is completed.

Light Fall is a very competent 2D platformer with a fairly low barrier for kids to enjoy. This could be a good gateway game for the likes of N++ or Super Meat Boy, since the checkpoints are plentiful and it is generally not a punishing title. The visuals are not going to win any awards but they are not offensive or too derivative; merely adequate. Light Fall is a great one for those who are not quite ready to take on Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze, but are growing out of Kirby Star Allies.

It's just all over rather quickly. I like Light Fall a whole lot and I could have stood for some more of it, maybe with some less spaced-out checkpoints and a less disappointing finale. As it stands, it's good game that ends a little too soon.

Overall Light Fall is a nice addition to the platforming genre, with some unique environments, unfortunately it falls short when it comes to difficulty. Adding the ability to create platforms at will seems like a good idea on paper, however it falls short when it allows you to skip large sections of the map with ease.

Light Fall is a 2D Platformer that smoothly delivers on an innovative new concept but fails to live up to its potential.

Dreamlike and original, Light Fall misses its point by being unsteady form start to finish. If the nice Shadow Core mecanics might charm you during the first moments of the game, its level design and very short adventure will not last long in the mind of every platformer addict. However, speedrunners might like the dedicated mode, which works nicely for those interested by emergent gameplay.

If you can ignore its feeble storytelling and abysmal final act, Light Fall provides some quick, engaging platforming on an eye-popping canvas.

If you aren’t going to speedrun or discover the secrets hidden away, the game won’t last long, but I still urge you to buy it, explore it and test yourself on some of the harder elements to be found.

Light Fall takes stunning, yet simple, artistic environments and showers them with relentless obstacles, devious traps, and your tears of frustration. The act of mustering through the stages proves to be a rewarding experience every single time. Undoubtedly, Light Fall is an adventure well worth delving into.
