How this score was computed
The VGC Score is a weighted blend on a press-comparable 0-100 quality scale. Steam approval rates are first calibrated (95% positive on Steam ≈ 89.5 quality, since Steam approval skews high). Press and tracked creator reviews each count ~2x a player review and share one cap against player evidence (creator buy/skip calls pool into an approval rate, calibrated like Steam approval); all-time sentiment is capped and halved (it's context, not verdict); reviews of the current build carry the most weight when a fresh patch anchors the window; and a 'typical game' prior keeps small samples from pegging the scale. Because press reviews and Metacritic user aggregates describe the launch build, their weight decays as the game ages (3-year half-life after a 1-year grace). That's how a game that launched rough can outgrow its old reception once updates win players over. Reviews under 2h playtime (the refund window), non-Steam activations, and free copies are downweighted.

“Instead of a great cooperative action game we got a dull project about monotonous shooting at stupid enemies during base defense. What a sad finale of Metal Gear series.”

“Konami killed another series. Even without comparison to main Metal Gear games, Survive is a boring and uninspiring experience overall.”

“Metal Gear Survive aligns itself with too many corporate gaming shenanigans to register as unadulterated fun.”

“A bizarre mix of gameplay styles utilising Metal Gear V assets, none of which are particularly interesting, providing little incentive to work your way through the long campaign to the end game co-op.”

“All in all, it's this hodgepodge mix of ideas that makes Metal Gear Survive a unique entry in the franchise, and perhaps its most divisive entry yet.”

“Yes, it’s not your typical Metal Gear and yes, its microtransactions do more harm than good. But still, Metal Gear Survive is an interesting spin-off that manages to build tension via exploration and provides with decent base building mechanics to keep you occupied for hours.”

“Fans of classic Metal Gear games will probably find little of interest here; their overall impressions of the game ought to be mediocre, Survive simply fails to captivate. The magical atmosphere known from Snake’s adventures is nowhere to be found. However, the new MGS should appeal to enthusiasts of survival, there’s a lot of it here. If you like exploration, gathering and crafting, give it a shot.”

“Metal Gear Survive is not for everyone. This is better approached as an open-world survival-horror game where building weapons from scratch, clawing at animals for food while drinking dirty water found in the world defines what it takes to survive. Including the Metal Gear name increases the external pressures around this game, as it is different to what fans of the franchise may expect. Aside from the aggravating always-online infrastructure of the game, Metal Gear Survive is a pretty good outing for those looking for a reason to battle zombies in an extremely vulnerable state. While the story is pretty meh, it is the exploration factor and sense of discovery and accomplishment, as well as feeding those hunger and thirst meters that showcase the fun and enjoyment of this experience.”

“Metal Gear Survive is Kojima’s true phantom pain. It’s a boring grind of repetitive missions, cardboard characters, and shockingly bad AI. It may get by on the strength of its association to the Metal Gear series alone, but die-hard fans will be very disappointed with how shallow of an experience it really is.”

“Metal Gear Survive is not a bad survival game, it's the wrong game under the wrong name at the wrong time. Without Kojima, the soul is missing, and no amount of solid base-defence gameplay can compensate for a story that has no place in this universe.”

“Fans of survival games may like the Metal Gear Survive for it's good action and stealth elements. But for those that loved Kojima's Metal Gear games Metal Gear Survive won't offer anything interesting.”
