How this score was computed
The VGC Score is a weighted blend on a press-comparable 0-100 quality scale. Steam approval rates are first calibrated (95% positive on Steam ≈ 89.5 quality, since Steam approval skews high). Press and tracked creator reviews each count ~2x a player review and share one cap against player evidence (creator buy/skip calls pool into an approval rate, calibrated like Steam approval); all-time sentiment is capped and halved (it's context, not verdict); reviews of the current build carry the most weight when a fresh patch anchors the window; and a 'typical game' prior keeps small samples from pegging the scale. Because press reviews and Metacritic user aggregates describe the launch build, their weight decays as the game ages (3-year half-life after a 1-year grace). That's how a game that launched rough can outgrow its old reception once updates win players over. Reviews under 2h playtime (the refund window), non-Steam activations, and free copies are downweighted.

“As open-world action RPGs go, Biomutant has some appeal. And if you're into it, there's a good level of replayability with the skills balance and hero-type selections. Most players, however, are likely to lose interest before reaching the end.”

“Biomutant is a game full of good ideas, but it doesn’t spend enough time making them engaging or even fun, resulting in a mediocre experience at best. You can have all the crafting, loot, side quests, and such you want, but when the core combat and exploration isn’t fun, it all goes to waste.”

“Away from the diluted AAA experience and the quirky Indie market, Biomutant slots somewhere in the middle, taking the best and worst aspects that these two extremes have to offer.”

“Maybe it's worth to wait for any potential patches, fixes, and changes to the overall balance and technical side, that will make Biomutant more engaging and fun, but as of right now it's hard to give a lesser score to such a charming game.”

“Everything in the game was done correctly. And even then, there's always something extra on top of that. Not once have I had the feeling that the developers from Experiment 101 wanted to 'cheese' the game.”

“Biomutant became a victim of its own ambitious. This is a painfully boring open world game with many unnecessary mechanics and "more stuff, less quality" approach.”

“Where other games tend to have a greater purpose and complexity behind more granular mechanics that demand closer attention from the player, Biomutant remains a rather simplified, if overstuffed, game of loot-hoovering. In practice, you’re still chasing objective markers and wandering salvageable areas in hopes of spotting the “interact with object” indicator. But while Biomutant’s breadth of options does indeed make that familiar process more rewarding than the norm, it never quite offsets the accompanying increase in tedium.”

“I’ve been eagerly awaiting Biomutant for a long time, and I have to admit I’m pretty satisfied. Once you work your way through the tutorial to the point where the game finally lets you roam freely around the map, you’ll just be enjoying the stunning graphics, fantastic kung fu combat, and the perfectly matched soundtrack. The map is vast, yet it never feels empty, as there’s always something happening around every corner. That said, the game does have a few flaws, such as overwhelming the player with unnecessary mechanics, simplistic puzzles, slightly repetitive side activities, and, most notably, the way the story is presented. Try playing the game yourself and form your own opinion, because that’s more important here than ever before.”

“Biomutant has a solid core. Unique enemy designs, a wide variety of weapons to use in combat, and flexible, fun combat are all highlights, but an arduous narrator and a monotone story filled with repetitive quests and tasks weigh the experience down. Pair all of this with the unpleasant visuals and low-quality textures, and we have to wonder if the game should have waited for Nintendo's next console. The actual gameplay experience is great, but instead of feeling like a polished handheld version of the game, Biomutant feels like it has been rushed out the door and left standing on the porch a bit dishevelled.”

“It pains me to say that Biomutant feels like a lot of rough drafts of ideas were cobbled together to create an incoherent whole. Experiment 101 has a lot of interesting things at work here and I really hope they keep making games, but focusing in one or two of their best concepts instead of tossing everything they have at a game would serve them well.”

“Biomutant is very uneven, almost like a “best of” AAA mechanics of the past few years. At the same time, its world is so evoking, so full of life and interesting stories, if you are willing to put the effort to find them, that’s hard not to feel compelled to enjoy it to the fullest.”

“Biomutant gives you a chance to experience a unique adventure but only if you’ll turn a blind eye to some flaws. The pretty, original, and very colorful world with a great artistic style is paired with not-so-pretty gameplay solutions and a handful of technical problems.”
