How this score was computed
The VGC Score is a weighted blend on a press-comparable 0-100 quality scale. Steam approval rates are first calibrated (95% positive on Steam ≈ 89.5 quality, since Steam approval skews high). Press and tracked creator reviews each count ~2x a player review and share one cap against player evidence (creator buy/skip calls pool into an approval rate, calibrated like Steam approval); all-time sentiment is capped and halved (it's context, not verdict); reviews of the current build carry the most weight when a fresh patch anchors the window; and a 'typical game' prior keeps small samples from pegging the scale. Because press reviews and Metacritic user aggregates describe the launch build, their weight decays as the game ages (3-year half-life after a 1-year grace). That's how a game that launched rough can outgrow its old reception once updates win players over. Reviews under 2h playtime (the refund window), non-Steam activations, and free copies are downweighted.

“Overall Romancing SaGa 2 was a great experience on the Switch. The console is a nice home for this retro gem and a lot of people are going to enjoy playing it for the first time. I highly recommend checking it out if you're a fan of this genre.”

“Romancing SaGa 2 is really intriguing new JRPG. The combat system has a great sense of depth thanks to its distinctive take on levelling, the inclusion of formations and how the player is held accountable for each party member. The kingdom management aspects also provide a greater sense of player agency and helps set it apart from conventional role-playing games. Due to this design, the story and character development, including the dialogue throughout, aren't quite as refined as other Square Enix titles. Regardless, the entire concept has aged surprisingly well, even by modern standards.”

“The downsides aren't enough to outright ruin the experience, and instead make this a bad port of a wonderful adventure.”

“In its systems and its storytelling, Romancing SaGa 2 is still a unique RPG -- one that genre enthusiasts may want to experience for its unorthodox methods alone. For all of its strange intricacies, though, this is a flawed fantasy adventure, hindered by potentially significant balancing issues and a horrible looking user interface. As a curiosity, Romancing SaGa 2 is worth looking into, but a lot more could have been done to bring the overall package up to speed.”

“Romancing SaGa 2 has a certain old school charm that invites any old school RPG fan to give it a shot. I don't think it's as polished as Square Enix's other titles that came out during this '90s era, but it's something worth investing in if you want a different take on the standard RPG formula. It's not for everybody, but Romancing SaGa has enough good qualities to give it a go if you've never played it before.”

“All in all, Romancing SaGa 2 is a decent RPG with some very interesting mechanics that were revolutionary for its time.”

“Romancing Saga 2 is an odd entity that has some really interesting and unique features but it’s so basic when it comes to the story, look and controls that it’s more like an RPG lite and feels very mobile freemium type game. Of course, I can’t compare this with the original having not played it but as far as this mobile port version goes I can’t recommend it at its current price point.”

“Far less linear than most of the JRPG at the time, Romancing SaGa 3 might be confusing at first but it's for the benefit of a large leeway for the player. Already pretty in 1995, the graphics of the game are polished in this remaster. It remains feeble though, as it doesn't provide any intersting new features.”

“Romancing SaGa 2 is a remarkable experience that, even after such a long time, still has creative ideas that make the experience feel all the more meaningful. It still shows its age in places, not least for the fact that many of the gameplay mechanics that whir beneath its pixel art exterior are never explained to the player. But, those looking for a classic packed with challenge will find much to enjoy.”

“Romancing SaGa 2 can be a really fun 16-Bit-RPG - at least if you already played previous similar titles from that period. The typical SNES-charm, with regards to gameplay as well as technically, will fascinate fans while beginners will have a tough start to get into the game.”

“RS2 has some interesting ideas, but ultimately I feel them poorly explained.”

“Romancing Saga 2 is a game very much trapped in the early 90s, while it’s great to see a title translated into English after all this time, it’s a shame that it’s one that offers very little fun or entertainment.”
