How this score was computed
The VGC Score is a weighted blend on a press-comparable 0-100 quality scale. Steam approval rates are first calibrated (95% positive on Steam ≈ 89.5 quality, since Steam approval skews high). Press and tracked creator reviews each count ~2x a player review and share one cap against player evidence (creator buy/skip calls pool into an approval rate, calibrated like Steam approval); all-time sentiment is capped and halved (it's context, not verdict); reviews of the current build carry the most weight when a fresh patch anchors the window; and a 'typical game' prior keeps small samples from pegging the scale. Because press reviews and Metacritic user aggregates describe the launch build, their weight decays as the game ages (3-year half-life after a 1-year grace). That's how a game that launched rough can outgrow its old reception once updates win players over. Reviews under 2h playtime (the refund window), non-Steam activations, and free copies are downweighted.

| Metacritic user ratings | – | – | 0 |
| Post-patch Steam reviews (trust-weighted) | 37% | 43 | 2 |

“While I still have some concerns with Team Sonic Racing, I can't deny that I've come around to it. I've sunk over 15 hours, across several extended play sessions, and had quite a bit of fun doing so. The $39.99 launch price is more than fair for what's included here. If you're looking for an enjoyable alternative after playing Mario Kart 8 for the past five years, Team Sonic Racing smoothly drifts its way to a decisive silver trophy. Start your engines!”

“Kart racers are tricky games to get right. Dwarfed by the mammoth success of Mario Kart and the recent release of Crash Team Racing, Team Sonic Racing is a surprisingly solid but ultimately forgettable addition to the genre. Taking the best elements from both of the aforementioned games, this Sega racer makes the most of its high-speed courses but is held back by some repetitive gameplay and a lack of variety with its tracks.”

“Team Sonic Racing is a fun arcade racing game with familiar characters, good track designs and an emphasis on team play, which suffers from outdated graphics, lagging multiplayer and other number of problems. Do not expect revelations.”

“Team Sonic Racing is an entertaining arcade racing game. It is an above-average racing title that you will enjoy especially with friends. We can definitely recommend this one, but for longer gaming sessions, maybe look somewhere else.”

“A great arcade racing game. Unfortunately, it's not better than Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed, despite some original ideas.”

“Whilst it may not challenge Mario Kart as the king of arcade kart racing, Team Sonic Racing's twist on the genre makes it distinctive enough to discourage comparisons to Nintendo's classic.”

“Taken on its own merits, Team Sonic Racing is a fun karting game that doesn't quite match Mario Kart 8 Deluxe in terms of either performance or sheer level of content, but still offers satisfying handling and should still keep Sonic fans entertained for a while. It's impossible not to compare it to its predecessor, though, and in all the areas where Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed excelled, Team Sonic Racing is merely competent. By no means a bad game, then, but when we look back years from now it won't be standing on any karting game podiums.”

“Team Sonic Racing is a decent mascot racer, that chose to focus too much on the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise. The game sorely lacks in variety and can lose its charm once you try to dig more than skin deep. Sonic fans are sure to get a kick out of SEGA’s latest racer, but may feel there is a lot to be desired.”

“Unfortunately, despite all it has going for it, Team Sonic Racing doesn't achieve its full potential. The track selection is far and away inferior to previous offerings. There are some standouts, but it feels like for each great track, there are two half-baked ones filled with recycled ideas that go on for far too long.”

“Team Sonic Racing was a welcomed surprise. The latest title in the line of Sonic racing games shows evolution. And with Team Sonic Racing, it proves that the series only continues to get better with each iteration.”

“We don't want to drag Team Sonic Racing down for ultimately quite trivial points. At the end of the day, Sumo Digital has served up a solid kart racer that succeeds in bringing something new to the table. It won't be to everyone's tastes, but the cooperative racing adds a nice layer of rapid fire strategy. It's implemented well, to the point where standard races feel distinctly secondary. It might be lacking the wow factor SEGA's other IPs brought to Sumo's other racers, and it's a shame performance is a little rocky, but this is a good option for PS4 players who want some arcadey thrills.”

“Team Sonic Racing is a fun kart racer that stands on its own thanks to creative and well made team mechanics. Sadly the game is far from perfect and a poor track design prevents it from becoming one of the best in the genre.”
