How this score was computed

The VGC Score is a weighted blend on a press-comparable 0-100 quality scale. Steam approval rates are first calibrated (95% positive on Steam ≈ 89.5 quality, since Steam approval skews high). Press and tracked creator reviews each count ~2x a player review and share one cap against player evidence (creator buy/skip calls pool into an approval rate, calibrated like Steam approval); all-time sentiment is capped and halved (it's context, not verdict); reviews of the current build carry the most weight when a fresh patch anchors the window; and a 'typical game' prior keeps small samples from pegging the scale. Because press reviews and Metacritic user aggregates describe the launch build, their weight decays as the game ages (3-year half-life after a 1-year grace). That's how a game that launched rough can outgrow its old reception once updates win players over. Reviews under 2h playtime (the refund window), non-Steam activations, and free copies are downweighted.

If the trailers successfully convinced you that One Piece Odyssey is of a scale of something like Dragon Quest, then you've been fooled. What we have here is just another mid-budget title that is aimed at the fans of the original One Piece manga and anime. This time with a jRPG coat of paint.

One Piece Odyssey has a powerful story that fans and newcomers will easily resonate with. On the gameplay side, unfortunately, you'll run into many issues that hinder your enjoyment of the game, such as the lack of clarity in quests or getting lost on the map.

Despite its minor flaws, One Piece Odyssey is a fantastic game. While it clearly has a specific target audience, it is precisely this group that will buy it, play it, and adore it. This doesn’t diminish its quality; on the contrary, it enhances it. Non-fans of the series will naturally feel more lost, and many things won’t make sense to them, which might even put them off. The repetitive combat certainly doesn’t help. However, the polished graphics, music, voice acting, and the simplicity of the battles are all appealing, not to mention the great story full of humor, friendship, and awesome one-liners.

One Piece Odyssey may not exactly be reinventing the wheel with its rather basic approach to JRPG game design, but it nonetheless provides a fun and engaging adventure that we'd recommend to any fans of One Piece or RPGs - preferably both if you don't want spoilers from the manga and anime. Though quibbles like the middling presentation and rather 'safe' gameplay design keep this one from being a top-shelf RPG, the strategic combat system, meaningful exploration, and nostalgic story all come together to make for a worthwhile experience that holds up well. We wouldn't suggest you rush out to buy this straight away, but it's definitely one to consider when a modest sale comes around.

“One Piece Odyssey” is an RPG made for “One Piece” fans. While you will get a lot of enjoyment out of it even if you don’t know much about the series plot due to its retrospective nature, it is better suited for those who either want to get into the franchise or remember some of its memorable set pieces. And, even if you don’t end up enjoying the plot, the combat, although easy, will keep you going due to its dynamic nature and amazing visuals.

Die-hard One Piece fans will be able to appreciate the game as an interactive reminiscence of its arcs with minor redesigns. Yet, those looking for a bold and unique game may need to look elsewhere.

It’s clear a lot of effort was taken to get this game just right, it instantly feels higher in quality compared to other One Piece games and does act as a true celebration of One Piece’s 25th anniversary. Odyssey doesn’t just feel like a generic game that’s been created with a licensed anime skin thrown on top like we’ve seen many times in the past with other anime titles. It’s apparent a lot of care was taken across it’s 5 year development time to make sure the game was fun to play, filled with great characters and is enjoyable for players whether they’re existing fans of One Piece or if they’re jumping into the game because they love JRPGs that take players on grand adventures.

For fans of the One Piece manga and anime, One Piece Odyssey may be worth investing in. However, it may not be the best game for those who are not familiar with the source material or are looking for a more challenging turn-based RPG. The game is relatively easy and assumes that players have a certain level of knowledge about One Piece.

One Piece Odyssey is a decent RPG with a beautiful world, enjoyable combat, great music, and surprisingly deep customisation. Sadly, its overly linear exploration and some tedious design choices keep it from reaching its full potential.

One Piece Odyssey is a fun game, especially for fans of the series, as there are little nods everywhere that can put a smile on that fan’s face.

As far as games in the series go, One Piece Odyssey is one of the best if you don't mind the narrative issues. I wasn't expecting it, but it ticks all the boxes that a solid JRPG needs.

No matter whether you're a hardcore One Piece fan or a complete newcomer, One Piece Odyssey is an utter joy of a JRPG. Its combat system remains incredibly enjoyable throughout, and new mechanics provide depth and strategy in droves. Most certainly the highlight of the experience, but with fun exploration to boot, you're always assured of a good time. One Piece Odyssey plays a lot like Dragon Quest XI, and it's not that far off being just as good as it.
