How this score was computed

The VGC Score is a weighted blend on a press-comparable 0-100 quality scale. Steam approval rates are first calibrated (95% positive on Steam ≈ 89.5 quality, since Steam approval skews high). Press and tracked creator reviews each count ~2x a player review and share one cap against player evidence (creator buy/skip calls pool into an approval rate, calibrated like Steam approval); all-time sentiment is capped and halved (it's context, not verdict); reviews of the current build carry the most weight when a fresh patch anchors the window; and a 'typical game' prior keeps small samples from pegging the scale. Because press reviews and Metacritic user aggregates describe the launch build, their weight decays as the game ages (3-year half-life after a 1-year grace). That's how a game that launched rough can outgrow its old reception once updates win players over. Reviews under 2h playtime (the refund window), non-Steam activations, and free copies are downweighted.

Anno 1800 is a very successful continuation of the cult series. With the returning to a more familiar setting, a creation of Ubisoft / Blue Byte discarded the strange decisions of past releases, while maintaining and multiplying the accumulated advantages. And, of course, great graphics and nice music will delight fans to meditate.

Ubisoft’s BlueByte learnt from their past mistakes, mixed the best parts of Anno 1404 and added several improvements from their successors, which culminated in one of the best, if not the best Anno ever.

The foundations of Anno 1800 are solid, and the game offers a diversified experience. Going back to the roots was a crucial decision, and I can say, with all certainty: this is one of the best strategy games of 2019. It's been a long while since we had such a lovely and absorbing game to play.

Anno 1800 is a return to Blue Byte and Ubisoft's long-running city-building franchise. Sadly, a number of flaws prove to be detrimental to an enjoyable voyage.

Anno 1800 Console Edition is an excellent translation of a deep, satisfying PC strategy experience to console. With engaging mechanics and an insane amount of replay value (not to mention multiplayer), anyone looking for a more arcade-kind of management sim will find a happy home here.

Streamlining done right, Anno 1800 is so addictive that it must remind you to take a stroll after some four hours of gameplay. Faithful to the Anno spirit, yet inventive, featuring a class system that offers many creative challenges.

Although Anno 1800 console version has some performance issues and technical bugs, I can say that it is a proof that strategy games can be played with great pleasure on consoles.

Increasingly complex yet approachable, Anno 1800 is an excellent entry in the long-running city building series that both challenges but also leaves space to admire one’s handiwork.

It is possible that the veterans of the series who miss Anno 1404 will still be able to bypass the failures of Anno 1800 and enjoy it.
