How this score was computed

The VGC Score is a weighted blend on a press-comparable 0-100 quality scale. Steam approval rates are first calibrated (95% positive on Steam ≈ 89.5 quality, since Steam approval skews high). Press and tracked creator reviews each count ~2x a player review and share one cap against player evidence (creator buy/skip calls pool into an approval rate, calibrated like Steam approval); all-time sentiment is capped and halved (it's context, not verdict); reviews of the current build carry the most weight when a fresh patch anchors the window; and a 'typical game' prior keeps small samples from pegging the scale. Because press reviews and Metacritic user aggregates describe the launch build, their weight decays as the game ages (3-year half-life after a 1-year grace). That's how a game that launched rough can outgrow its old reception once updates win players over. Reviews under 2h playtime (the refund window), non-Steam activations, and free copies are downweighted.

With its sledgehammer humor and clever blend of stealth and action, Helldivers is a lot smarter than a passing glance might have you believe. It’s a game in which life is cheap but the deaths aren’t, where carelessness gets you turned into kibble, and sustained battle will leave you with an empty gun and a horde of pissed off monsters.

Helldivers is an enjoyable game, especially white playing its co-op mode that allows playing with three friends. It's not very good playing solo and it's much harder, enough to put average players in hardship. However, it has quite a lack of variety when it comes to mission objectives and its gameplay mechanics aren't very good either.

Gameplay is quick, satisfying, and often chaotic, and the stratagem system gives the action a unique identity. The only question mark here is the one that hangs over the title's community, which must be sustained if the shooter is to realise its impressive potential.

Helldivers has everything we expected in an Arrowhead game: it's fun, it's challenging and highly rewarding. It is best played with friends as you can annoy them for the sake of fun. The social component of the global war effort is well implemented and motivates players to engage in it. Highly recommended.

Helldivers is simple in concept, but demanding and very engaging. Hours of fun guaranteed.

Imperfect as it may be, Helldivers' focus on the cooperation of a small team looking out for each other against oppressive waves of enemies elevates it from what would have been a fun and challenging shooter, to a game that now sits at the top of my list of how I plan to spend many future evenings: with a gun in hand, my allies at my back, and a broad smile on my face.

After being left disappointed many a time by previous local multiplayer games the PlayStation 4 has had to offer, Helldivers is a breath of fresh air providing short bursts of explosive action that’s both strategic and enjoyable.

Although the gameplay and mission structure quickly becomes repetitive, Helldivers offers hours of entertaining co-op twin-stick action in a universe that's begging to be further developed.

Its strategy, action and excitement on cooperative mode with friendly fire helps us to forget that Helldivers' procedural design results in repetitive matches. If you are looking for a game with difficult challenges and a great time with friends then this is the game you're looking for.

Helldivers’ metagame campaign and variety of gameplay are more than enough to keep you entertained, but only players with a tight-knit group of co-op buddies will be able to get the most from the experience.

Helldivers isn’t game that has come out of nowhere, but it is one that has fully exceeded expectations.

It isn’t the prettiest game you can play on PS4, PS3 or Vita, but Helldivers is one of the most exhilarating, and you’ll get all three versions for the price of one.
