How this score was computed

The VGC Score is a weighted blend on a press-comparable 0-100 quality scale. Steam approval rates are first calibrated (95% positive on Steam ≈ 89.5 quality, since Steam approval skews high). Press and tracked creator reviews each count ~2x a player review and share one cap against player evidence (creator buy/skip calls pool into an approval rate, calibrated like Steam approval); all-time sentiment is capped and halved (it's context, not verdict); reviews of the current build carry the most weight when a fresh patch anchors the window; and a 'typical game' prior keeps small samples from pegging the scale. Because press reviews and Metacritic user aggregates describe the launch build, their weight decays as the game ages (3-year half-life after a 1-year grace). That's how a game that launched rough can outgrow its old reception once updates win players over. Reviews under 2h playtime (the refund window), non-Steam activations, and free copies are downweighted.

With FINAL FANTASY TACTICS, The Ivalice Chronicles, Square Enix once again proves that a great remaster can both modernize and honor an original’s legacy. It’s a careful balance of fresh updates and deep respect for longtime fans and newcomers alike. The addition of full voice acting alone makes The Ivalice Chronicles worth revisiting, even for those who’ve already experienced every previous entry.

Final Fantasy Tactics - The Ivalice Chronicles knocks the rust off the original, shines it up like new, and makes lots of subtle changes that only enhance the classic. And if you want a version without any changes, that's here too, just as grainy as you remember. I couldn't have hoped for more.

Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles is so close to being the definitive way to play what remains a masterful game to this day. Square Enix's unfortunate decision to axe content introduced in The War of the Lions stings, but if you can get past that, the raft of quality-of-life improvements, additions, and upgrades make it a fantastic way to revisit, or experience for the first time, one of the most influential video games ever made.

Final Fantasy: The Ivalice Chronicles does enough to make it the definitive way to play this masterpiece, doesn’t matter if it’s your first, second, third or tenth time. Adds difficulty options, improved visuals, amazing voice acting, a new interface that makes every tutorial, dialogue and menu more comprehensive and more. All that while also maintaining the essence and charm of the original.

Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles remains a fantastic strategy game, and its story feels even more relevant in 2025. It has everything. Hope. Despair. Loyalty. Betrayal. The option to take on battles that put your critical thinking skills and hours of preparation to the test. This latest release feels like a near perfect one for preparation purposes, due to it offering Classic and Enhanced options. I think if all content from the War of the Lions PSP release made it in, I might even consider it flawless. But even without it, it’s an exemplary experience.

In an industry where remasters are just a way of using nostalgia to make more money, The Ivalice Chronicles goes beyond the standard “make it HD” pattern and bring great improvements to the original game.

They know their classics at Square Enix, that much is clear. Final Fantasy Tactics shines like never before. But whether this polished gem will reach a new audience beyond diehard RPG fans is something we dare to doubt.

Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles is perhaps the best version of an already amazing game. All of its strengths are front and center, and any flaws were present in the original game, even if they're amplified in some cases. Even if you dislike the changes, the classic version is still makes it still an excellent way to experience the game, assuming you don't miss the War of the Lions bonus features. Final Fantasy Tactics remains a classic and a must-play for any fans of strategy RPGs or the Final Fantasy franchise.

Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles is a successful revisitation of one of the best tactics adventures and Final Fantasy spin-offs to ever do it. Revisiting the haunting and memorable world of Ivalice, you're on the road with Ramza and company again, depicted in a lush art style that pays respect to the original's name. Quality of life additions make it the most palatable but refined version yet, making battles smoother and as aptly challenging as ever. The grandiosity of it all is also bolstered this time, thanks to the fully voice-acted story from a talented cast that helps paint the Shakespearean script you're subjected to and the deeply political world you're situated in. It's so respectful of the original that you can also say to hell with all of this and just also boot the classic version from the menu. It is a classic revisited and not disrespected. It's joy distilled in a perfect package. Crucially, it's Final Fantasy Tactics, in your hands all over again, for the first time in over a decade. The thought is so beautiful it could make me cry.

The politically-charged 1997 PlayStation original is one of the finest tactics games of all time. This remaster offers a brilliant new reading of what was already a classic text.
