How this score was computed
The VGC Score is a weighted blend on a press-comparable 0-100 quality scale. Steam approval rates are first calibrated (95% positive on Steam ≈ 89.5 quality, since Steam approval skews high). Press and tracked creator reviews each count ~2x a player review and share one cap against player evidence (creator buy/skip calls pool into an approval rate, calibrated like Steam approval); all-time sentiment is capped and halved (it's context, not verdict); reviews of the current build carry the most weight when a fresh patch anchors the window; and a 'typical game' prior keeps small samples from pegging the scale. Because press reviews and Metacritic user aggregates describe the launch build, their weight decays as the game ages (3-year half-life after a 1-year grace). That's how a game that launched rough can outgrow its old reception once updates win players over. Reviews under 2h playtime (the refund window), non-Steam activations, and free copies are downweighted.
| Component | Positive | Quality (0-100) | Weight (pseudo-reviews) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Press reviews (OpenCritic) | – | 69 | 27 |
| All-time Steam reviews | 70% | 67 | 849 |
| Metacritic user ratings | – | – | 0 |
| Post-patch Steam reviews (trust-weighted) | 80% | 74 | 3 |
| Calibration prior (typical game) | – | 72 | 50 |

“A burnt child dreads the fire, as they say. The developers of AO Tennis risked and it paid off. AO Tennis 2 isn't a bad game and the bet on community content seems like the right one for a less expensive game. When you get over the initial feelings and the controls get under your skin, you'll get to enjoy AO Tennis 2.”

“There’s a genuinely brilliant game hidden away somewhere in AO Tennis 2, but you need to have the patience of a saint to put up with its horrendous frame rate issues and the impact they have on its already tricky stroke timing system. ”

“AO Tennis 2 can often feel like reaching Top Spin 4 levels of quality, but it still lacks on one of the most important ones: gameplay. Imprecise controls and an awful AI makes this game really hard to recommend.”

“Let’s face it, when it comes to sports titles, let alone more serious sports sims, the Switch library is a bit of a wasteland...”

“AO Tennis 2 is a winner, raising the baseline for all tennis titles on PS4. There are still minor quirks to its gameplay, but it's well-presented and fun, making its enriched Career mode dangerously addictive. ”

“For me, AO Tennis 2 is equipped with some useful innovations that at least increase long-term motivation. In terms of gameplay, not much has changed from the previous part, but this was not necessary either. Rather, you worked on the scope and everything around it, so you are now working on your professional tennis player in a fun career mode and getting better and better. Unfortunately, the visual presentation is still the biggest weak point of the game, but you can get over it because of the gameplay. If you are looking for a good tennis game, AO Tennis 2 is definitely the right place. If you already own the first part, you should definitely consider buying it because of your extended career. If you only want to play matches, then the first part is probably enough. The upgrade was definitely worth it for me.”

“Overall, Big Ant Studios and Bigben Interactive’s AO Tennis 2 is a great title. With the only real issue being the load times, playing either singles or doubles for any amount of time whether a quick set or a couple of them is great fun either against the CPU, your friends, or the scary people online that make things look way too easy like Ryouma in the Prince of Tennis.”

“AO Tennis 2 is quite an upgrade and a marked improvement from the previous game, with more features, a surprisingly deep career mode and refined gameplay that feels dynamic and engaging from point to point, especially once you’ve gotten used to the timing and flow. There are still some issues when it comes to the overall polish of the experience and the lack of licensed content overall that hold it back from being a total ace, but with minimal competition in this genre, AO Tennis 2 is an entertaining and fun tennis game that is easily the best of this generation.”

“Truth be told, AO Tennis 2 is not the best tennis game that I have ever played. It is, however, a solid attempt at a simulation-style sports game.”

“Enter the competition if you want to beat some good tennis players. There are some improvements, but it is still not enough.”

“AO Tennis 2 is a bright, likeable tennis sim with bags of room to grow, and as it stands is easily the best tennis game of this generation.”

“AO Tennis 2 presents itself as a realistic tennis simulation and on the Nintendo Switch, that's enough to stand out and set a high threshold. Unfortunately the overall experience turns out to be a disappointment. Despite a well-executed career mode and a helpful player creation tool, the gameplay in AO Tennis 2 feels disproportionately difficult, while its cast of players doesn't make much sense. Adding to that, its visual environment belongs to a previous time and its performance issues harm the experience even more. Players looking for a sharp and exquisite tennis simulation on the Switch will walk out disappointed.”
