How this score was computed
The VGC Score is a weighted blend on a press-comparable 0-100 quality scale. Steam approval rates are first calibrated (95% positive on Steam ≈ 89.5 quality, since Steam approval skews high). Press and tracked creator reviews each count ~2x a player review and share one cap against player evidence (creator buy/skip calls pool into an approval rate, calibrated like Steam approval); all-time sentiment is capped and halved (it's context, not verdict); reviews of the current build carry the most weight when a fresh patch anchors the window; and a 'typical game' prior keeps small samples from pegging the scale. Because press reviews and Metacritic user aggregates describe the launch build, their weight decays as the game ages (3-year half-life after a 1-year grace). That's how a game that launched rough can outgrow its old reception once updates win players over. Reviews under 2h playtime (the refund window), non-Steam activations, and free copies are downweighted.
| Component | Positive | Quality (0-100) | Weight (pseudo-reviews) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Press reviews (OpenCritic) | – | 79 | 7 |
| All-time Steam reviews | 98% | 93 | 1000 |
| Metacritic user ratings | – | 73 | 4 |
| Post-patch Steam reviews (trust-weighted) | 98% | 94 | 325 |
| Calibration prior (typical game) | – | 72 | 50 |
Acclaim gate: the raw blend lands at 92.5, but scores above 88 must be earned in front of a mass audience; this verdict rests on 4,045 player reviews, a largely self-selected fanbase. As more players weigh in, the ceiling rises (full scale unlocks at 100,000 reviews).

“Each level being self-contained allows the team to dabble with different tones, too. An early level dealing with an ancient Sarcophagus is particularly adept at splicing horror into the experience, while a level taking place in a church uses an organ to incorporate musical elements into the game. It’s all handled flawlessly, and greatly enhances the value of the product, by offering varied, distinctive experiences level-to-level.”

“An amazing experience that has to be seen to be believed. The Room VR: A Dark Matter takes Fireproof Games' established escape room genre to the next level and elevates it to incredible heights of an outstanding adventure thanks to the power of VR. I completely recommend this to any VR buffs out there, there is no reason not to enjoy this game.”

“The Room VR: A Dark Matter does a great job of making its interactive puzzle boxes more than just hunting for the right knob, often leaning into what VR does best by putting you into cool situations that are shown off in flashy and polished fashion. Unfortunately, there’s just not a lot of it here, and its intricate detail can occasionally cause confusion as you flail at the mostly inert world around you. Still, its two hours of puzzles were certainly worth solving.”

“The Room VR: A Dark Matter is one of my favourite PSVR puzzle games of all time, offering a bunch of unique and entertaining puzzles within a beautiful and magical world. Although the length of the stages got rather short towards the end, my journey up until that point was a very memorable and enjoyable one, so the final stage didn’t alter my overall opinion, I just wished it had cranked things up and presented us with harder and longer puzzles to solve. If you’re a fan of puzzle games and own a VR headset, I can’t recommend this game enough, this title is a must-buy, it’s that simple!”

“The Room VR series has been around for a while now with iterations on phones and tablets, as well as PC and consoles. The realisation of the world and puzzle boxes of The Room VR: A Dark Matter, afterwards shortened to The Room VR, thrust the user into a virtual space alongside various locations through five or so chapters. In The Room VR, you play as a detective, investigating the disappearance of an Egyptologist, who worked at The British Institute of Archaeology, London, in 1908.”

“A strong sense of atmosphere, augmented by spectacular graphics and challenging puzzles, turns The Room VR: A Dark Matter into a must-play title for VR-owners. You should, however, keep into account that the motion controller doesn't always work perfectly when turning. ”

“The Room VR is the new entry in the veteran series, a puzzle game that shines in VR with a collection of surprising puzzles with some impressive situations, that in the end feels very, very short (a couple of hours, little more if you get stuck) that feels even worse given its actual price...”

“The Room VR: A Dark Matter is great. It's got plenty of unique puzzles, which never felt overused once, and has some very creative environments. It also has a deeply mysterious story, which was designed in the same vein as the original mobile games in the series. Consequently, in the same vein as those, it didn't feel like it was a completely new and authentic VR experience. The developers didn't utilise all that VR is capable of, which is a real bummer for what this title could have ultimately been.”

“The Room VR: A Dark Matter is a nice puzzle game that suffers from VR's current limits.”

“The result is a rather confused adventure, where the player is easily lost between two puzzles. The whole thing is not helped by a script and an uninteresting universe. However, some good game design ideas, like the possibility of entering inside certain mechanisms, hit the mark. And the diversity of the puzzles is to be welcomed. A Dark Matter is thus a pleasant title despite its flaws. But far from being a must in VR.”
